The Port of Whitman County is preparing to appoint a new commissioner to fill the remainder of Commissioner Dan Boone's term, which expires at the end of this year. Boone passed away March 2. The Port announced that interviews have been scheduled for the appointment during the regular Port meeting on April 20. It is about time to get out the old horses, mules and vintage farming equipment once again. Spring Farming Days and the plowing bee are coming up in Pomeroy and Colfax. The annual event takes farming back to its roots by highlighting the horse and mule farming operations that were the common farming practice before automatic machinery was available. Relay for Life makes its return to the Palouse this weekend with the annual American Cancer Society benefit slated in Pullman on Saturday starting at noon. The 12-hour event, themed “Carnival for a Cure,” will be held at Grimes Play Field on the WSU campus. Relay for Life is marking a shift this year by incorporating the former Whitman County Relay, held annually in June in Colfax, into the Pullman teams. The Association of Washington Cities has recently sent a letter to cities and towns with populations less than 15,000 across the state asking for signatures in support of keeping the state's Public Works Assistance Account (PWAA). The association has collected the signatures of 64 mayors, including Colfax Mayor Todd Vanek, Rosalia Mayor Nanette Konishi, Endicott Mayor David Bilow and Garfield Mayor Ray McCown. After seeking for nearly two-and-a-half years to be able to establish its own court, the Town of Albion and Whitman County have entered into an interlocal agreement for Albion to be served by Whitman County District Court. The county commissioners Monday voted unanimously on the agreement with the town that was first brought before the board nearly a year ago in May of 2016. Contest entries and vendor applications are now open for Pullman's 29th annual National Lentil Festival, set Aug. 18-19 this year. Applications for spaces for food vendors, marketplace vendors and non-profit night vendors are available. Non-profit night is slated for Friday night, and spaces for that event are $70. Colfax's newest art contest is a little loose on the rules, but Colfax Art Council Vice President Katie Martin said she expects it to be a huge success. For entrants, there is no age restriction, no restriction on where an entrant lives and no restriction on the art medium. “It's really open to everyone,” said Martin. The only conditions? The public hearing in LaCrosse last week for the consideration of allowing sheep and goats in town for grazing purposes was attended by 17 residents. The issue came up last year when the town council allowed a resident to bring a sheep to town to graze his property, and the town council is now considering allowing the practice. Pioneer Telephone Company of LaCrosse is expanding its network to include high-speed broadband access for all of its customers. The company announced through a letter to its customers that it plans to install fiber for all customers. “We are going to do fiber to the home,” said Dallas Filan, general manager. “It’s a 10-year project, and we’re hoping to do it in five.” Filan said the company plans to get the project off the ground this spring by starting in Hooper. Endicott residents will see a change to their water and sewer bills. The Town of LaCrosse is examining an ordinance which requires all weeds, grass and other uncultivated vegetation to be cut and disposed of at least once per month from April through September. The Town of St. John at its Feb. 27 town council meeting passed an ordinance regarding water use restrictions during emergencies. The ordinance reads that the council may declare a water emergency in the event of severe drought, extended pipeline or equipment malfunction, or any other condition which significantly reduces the town's ability to supply water in order to protect the public health, safety or welfare or to preserve the water supply.
