JOHN - The town of St. John was host to the sixth annual "Try"-athalon where people participated in trap shooting, golf and horseshoes to raise funds for the Eagles/Wildcats Sports Booster Club on Saturday, June 29. Those participating shot a round of trap at the St. John Gun Club before heading to the Golf Course for nine rounds and finishing at the fairgrounds for horseshoes.   • Bicycle ride up Steptoe Butte to take place

    TEKOA — A bicycle ride up Steptoe Butte is set for 9 a.m. this Saturday, June 29. Participants will meet at the Rosalia City Park on West 9th Street in Rosalia and will make a 52-mile trek on the backroads to Oakesdale before climbing the spiraling road up Steptoe Butte. It will be a 14-minute per mile pace on the 4-mile climb. The road up the butte is rough with plenty of potholes with repaving not scheduled until 2025. The leader of the event is Paul Brunton.     TEKOA — Whitman County Public Health is expanding its program this year to offer free swim lessons for Whitman County residents. The towns where swim lessons will be offered are Garfield, LaCrosse, Oakesdale, Palouse, Pullman (income based), Rosalia and Tekoa. Pullman swim lessons are for Pullman residents only.     TEKOA — Two new youth sports are being offered by the Tekoa-Rosalia Athletic Club (TRAC) starting this fall. Flag football will be offered for first through sixth grade boys and soccer will be for kindergarten through sixth graders (5-12 year olds). Both sports are still in the early planning stages and will gauge the number of teams based on how many athletes sign up to play. Currently there are 26 swimmers registered on the team with several talented athletes returning from last year, according to head coach Janni Burt. The Palouse announced its 2024 schedule, beginning Friday, June 14, and running through Saturday, Aug. 17. The schedule is subject to change.     LIND - People gathered from miles around to witness the destruction of farm equipment at the 35th annual Lind Lions Club combine derby on Saturday, June 8.     OLYMPIA - Washington anglers will be required to possess a recreational fishing license for freshwater smelt, crawfish and carp, according to a news release by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. The new law signed by Governor Inslee goes into effect June 6.     COLFAX — On Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, anglers will not be required to have a fishing license for certain species. Trout and bass in lowland lakes across the state, as well as shad can be caught and kept without a license. However, starting this year, a valid license is still required for anyone 15 or older to harvest any species requiring a catch record card, including salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and halibut, and all shellfish.
