  • Emergency powers should be curtailed

    Roger Harnack, Whitman County Gazette|Feb 24, 2022

It’s been three weeks since I testified in writing on Senate Bill 5909 before a state Senate committee Jan. 28. At that time, my testimony facetiously pointed out the measure that purportedly would limit gubernatorial powers was a “step in the right direction” that accomplished nothing. Nothing has changed since that testimony. Proponents tell us the bill would make it possible for the legislative leadership — the majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate — to end a governor...

  • Reopen Palouse Falls Hiking

    Roger Harnack, Whitman County Gazette|Feb 10, 2022

Palouse Falls has long been one of my favorite places to hike. Over the years, I’ve hiked the mile or so trek to the top of the main falls on numerous occasions. I’ve hiked it by myself, with friends and even my daughter when she was very young. I’ve meandered along the Palouse River to the upper falls and descended the basalt rim to the pool at the base of the falls about 189 feet below. For those of us who grew up in Eastern Washington, hiking Palouse Falls trails has long been a rite of passa...

  • The last year ended with a bang

    Roger Harnack, Gazette publisher|Jan 6, 2022

Well, more accurately, 2021 ended in smoke, at least here at the newspaper. That smoke came from the meltdown of our labeling system. And as a result, your newspaper was likely late. And for that we apologize. I want to assure you we are already in the process of resolving the issue. Hopefully, this edition of the newspaper reaches you on time, a sign that the labeling system problem has been resolved. Who would have thought that just getting your name and address on the newspaper would be such...

Throughout our region, families are shopping for festive meals and gifts, decorating, and anxiously awaiting the moment they see “long-lost” family and friends. It’s a time where children and adults express wishes, not just for gifts from Santa Claus, but also for happiness and prosperity for friends, family, and sometimes even mankind. And while Christmas is a decidedly Christian holiday...

  • Democrats back off long-term care tax

    Roger Harnack, Gazette publisher|Dec 23, 2021

RITZVILLE — Sen. Mark Schoesler’s efforts to halt implementation of the new long-term care tax on workers in Washington State may be paying off. For months, Schoesler, R-Ritzville, was trying to upend the tax on workers income to pay for a delayed long-term health care benefit. He even pre-filed Senate Bill 5503 earlier this month calling on the Legislature to step back from the tax and look at alternatives. “Many workers won’t be able to afford it – people earning an average wage will lose hundreds from their paychecks each year,” Schoesler s...

  • State high court declines redistricting duty

    Roger Harnack, Gazette Publisher|Dec 16, 2021

The decision follows an attempt by the Redistrict Commission to reapportion the state in the wake of the 2020 Census. If the maps are retained, Franklin and Adams counties are to be split between legislative districts. Currently, both fall within the 9th Legislative...

  • Water rights should be kept private

    Roger Harnack, Gazette publisher|Dec 2, 2021

Under the guise of water conservation, the state Department of Ecology is once again moving to take water rights from farmers, ranchers and other private holders. Last month, the agency announced plans to fund creation of local “water banks,” in addition to the state “water bank” already in existence. The agency says the program helps municipalities buy water rights from private owners. It has set $14 million aside for the program. The goal, agency spokesman Jimmy Norris said, is to “preser...

  • Time to recall and give thanks

    Roger Harnack, Gazette Publisher|Nov 24, 2021

The last 20 months have been exceedingly difficult for most Americans. Across the country there have been coronavirus mandates, riots, increasing taxes, job losses and more. The crime rate in many areas is skyrocketing. Many stores have empty shelves. And mental health problems are out of control. The stress we feel is exacerbated by television news and social media. But rather than dwell on the negatives we are bombarded with daily, take this week to focus on the positives. Remember, this...
