    The Colton girls traveled to Kamiah Friday night to see their win streak end at 37 games in a 43-34 loss. Kamiah (10-2) took a lead in the first quarter and held it to the end. The game was played in Idaho so there was no shot clock, which Kamiah used to slow the pace on the up-tempo wildcats. Colton’s Jenna Moser scored her only two field goals in the first quarter.     Colton junior Jake Straughan scored 18 points in the third quarter against Kamiah Friday on the way to a career-high 42 points in a 65-60 comeback win for Colton. The Wildcats trailed by 21 points in the first quarter of the non-league game before cuttting the deficit to 12 at halftime. In the third, Colton outscored Kamiah 27-8 as Straughan had 18 points to go with Dalton Patchen’s nine.     The Colfax girls (9-2) picked up a win and a loss this weekend at the Avista Holiday Tournament in Lewiston. In their opening game Friday, Colfax suffered under the Lewiston press, giving up the ball and a 15-4 Lewiston lead. Colfax fought back to 19-11, before Lewiston guard Paige Wells scored seven straight points to take command of the game. Opening the third quarter, with a 12-point lead, Lewiston pulled back on their press and still held Colfax to just four third-quarter points.     The Grillbilly Cafe is set to open, replacing The Teapot Cafe. Lois Startin, member of LaCrosse Community Pride, said the Pride board chose Dionne Evans of Hay to operate the cafe. Evans will operate the restaurant as the Grillbilly Cafe and is refurbishing the restaurant to accommodate the new venture. Tentative opening date for the cafe is March 1.     With little fanfare, Whitman County commissioners unanimously approved the 2013 balanced budget Monday morning. Although there was a $200,000 deficit in the budget, commissioners approved taking it out of cash reserves to make up for the shortfall. Just prior to the budget vote, commissioners approved a one percent hike in property taxes. After two public hearings, the proposed $59.58 million budget was expected to have a deficit of $200,000.     Colfax social agencies, the fire department and the hospital auxiliary all reported community generosity made gift giving successful this holiday season. Colfax volunteer firefighter Assistant Chief and Chaplain Ken McNaughton said firefighters served 300 children this year.     The Agricultural Marketing and Management Organization has announced its 2013 schedule for farm management training programs in Whitman County and surrounding locations. In 2012 more than 300 growers participated in AMMO programs in Lincoln and Whitman counties. This year the organization has added programs located in Ritzville and Pasco.     On Friday, Dec. 28, Whitman County Gazette Editor Jerry Jones was taken by ambulance to Whitman Hospital and Medical Center and then transferred to a Spokane hospital after suffering what physicians are calling a mild stroke. Jones was at the county courthouse doing his daily rounds for the Bulletin when courthouse personnel noticed he needed assistance.
