    Final version of the state’s redistricting plan which was approved last night was drawn without earlier concerns over changes in the 9th Legislative District becoming a reality. Chief concern from an earlier proposal was the potential departure of State Sen. Mark Schoesler from the 9th District because that version had Adams County bumped out of the district.     A different kind of wind turbine went up east of Colfax on Draper-Brown Road this fall. It’s difference in how easily it comes down. Scott Draper and his son Daniel installed a ReDriven Power Inc. 10 kilowatt wind turbine in November. The device is equipped with a hydraulic system which allows the turbine to be lowered in order to perform annual maintenance.     Gazette Reporters The illness of Whitman County Commissioner Michael Largent Tuesday prevented the county’s decision to “opt in” to new rules to govern farming around environmentally-sensitive areas. Commissioner Greg Partch said at a hearing Tuesday night commissioners will vote, and likely join, the state’s new Ruckelshaus program next Monday. Farming is currently allowed to take place anywhere in Whitman County, with no restrictions for environmentally critical areas.     Many years in the making, the doors are about to open for the new Palouse Community Center Building. “We got the keys yesterday,” Community Center board secretary Janet Barstow said Friday. Volunteers rolled in appliances for the kitchen.     Helen Elmira Baker A funeral service for Helen Elmira Baker, 91, will be Monday, Jan. 9, at 1:00 at the Tekoa Community Church. Burial will follow at the Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa. Mrs. Baker died Dec. 31, 2011, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. Born Sept. 22, 1920, to Harlan Obert and Lulu Blanche Surrey Davids at Livonia, Miss., she was baptized in the Omaha Missouri Baptist Church and attended the one-room Abbott School then graduated from Livonia High School in 1937.     Kirk Suess of Steptoe announced last Thursday, Dec. 29, his campaign to unseat Greg Partch for Whitman County Commissioner from District 1.     County “working on” source of $15 million Betting on an anticipated $11 million in new revenue, Whitman County commissioners Tuesday decided to put up $15 million to help build a shopping center on the Washington side of the state line. “This is a risk that will forever define the economic landscape of Whitman County,” said Commissioner Greg Partch.     Artful Accessories by the Palouse Women Artists Organization opened at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn Jan. 5 and continues through January 29. An opening reception will be Jan. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. Palouse Women Artists Organization is a group from the Palouse region and includes artists of all skill levels. The group formed in 2009 and encourages new artists to join. More than 25 members contributed to Dahmen exhibit.
