Eich A memorial service for Arlene L Eich, 85, a long-time resident of Lacey, will be at the Community Center in Garfield Saturday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. She died Dec. 17, 2009, at Providence St. Peters Hospital in Olympia. She lived for approximately 30 years in Seattle and Lacey. Born in Garfield, Dec. 16, 1924, to Foy and Pearl Marple Trimble, she was raised in the Garfield area and graduated from Garfield High School. Assignment to the 1B classification for the next two sports years came as a bit of a surprise for Pomeroy, but the district decided in advance to accept the change if it happened. Colfax Bulldogs finished up with 53 points last Wednesday to place seventh at the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament. Kittitas wrestlers rolled all the way from the middle of the state and stacked up an impressive 224 points to take the team honors. The K club took seven weight championships. Prosecutor Denis Tracy said crimes may begin to be prosecuted less vigorously if Whitman County’s budget woes continue. Because of the county’s sagging revenue totals, Tracy’s 2010 budget is $21,902 below 2009. To cover that cost, Tracy’s office will be open to the public two hours less per day during 2010 than it was in 2009. Tracy told the Gazette Tuesday the reduction in hours is a result of leaving a receptionist position unfilled. “We have fewer people in the prosecutor’s office, but we do not have fewer cases,” Tracy said in a statement r...
The county parks department is now facing a particularly lean year, after county commissioners passed the 2010 county budget last week. The budget trimmed off hours for part-time employees, meaning the current two park rangers must now stretch summer hours to tasks like maintaining trails, lawn mowing or painting. Most other expenses for the parks department also saw steep cuts. “We’ve had to cut in every area of the parks,” said parks director Tim Myers. Negotiations kicked off Monday in Whitman County’s attempt to purchase the county health department’s Pullman office. County commissioners signed off on a $94,000 offer to purchase the building in the Professional Mall which it currently leases from the Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation. Megan Guido, who directs the foundation for the hospital, said Tuesday the foundation wants out of the landlord business. Whitman County sheriff’s office opened the new year checking out a suspicious object found in the yard of a residence on the Old Moscow Road east of Pullman. At 8:10 p.m. New Year’s Day, Dep. Brian Keller responded after the homeowner reported an item that looked like a tank with a wire sticking out of it in his driveway. After investigating, Dep. The Washington Department of Ecology has assessed a $40,000 fine to Roth Farms for allegedly burning three large, wet piles of broken bales of wheat and gras straw this spring without a permit on their farm between Farmington and Oakesdale. Ecology spokesperson Jani Gilbert said DOE investigators observed what they deemed to be illegal burning or smoldering between April 27 and May 1, 2009. The lowest bidder has all but been selected for the construction to quell the leaking of Uniontown’s three wastewater lagoons, according to the consulting engineer working on the project. With the low bid of $1.7 million, MRM Construction out of Ellensburg is weeks away from signing their final contract to undertake the project. Colfax School District is asking taxpayers to provide insurance in case the state legislature cuts a major portion of its funding during the upcoming supplemental session. The District will seek an increase of more than 39 percent in its special levy request over the next two years.
