    James D. “Jimmie” Hall, 91, longtime Colfax resident, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Whitman Hospital. Mr. Hall was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Steptoe the youngest of six children to James R. and Ida M. (McNabb) Hall (Roberts). He spent his youth in Steptoe and attended Steptoe High School. In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, but was medically discharged in boot camp. Returning to the Northwest, he moved to St. Helens, Ore., where he drove bus for Oregon Motor Coaches between Portland and Astoria. It was on this route that he met...

Margaret was born Oct. 28, 1919, at Anaconda, Mont., to Paul Joseph and Josephine (Reynolds) Everett, Sr. She grew up and attended schools in Montana and attended the Great Falls School of Nursing where she received a degree in Nursing. She served in the United States Navy Nursing Corps during World War II from 1943 – 1946, serving in Southern California and the South Pacific, most notably in the Guadalcanal campaign.     Staff shortages in both the police and fire departments have made scheduling more challenging recently. The fire department is short a chief upon the resignation of Chief Ralph Walter. Full-time firefighters Tim Tingley and Jenny Jordan will work Monday through Friday and volunteers will take shifts on the weekends, according to Tingley. This will put the full-timers on duty during the city’s business hours and volunteers, who are employed in other jobs, will be more available on weekends, he said.     The Sam Peck family lost their home and most of their belongings in an early morning fire last week. LaCrosse firefighters were called to a blaze about 3 a.m. Friday morning at the home at milepost 100 about two miles from of Pampa Pond.
