Freezing temperatures last week and into the weekend led to several Colfax water meters freezing and, in some cases, breaking. “Often times when those mains freeze, they break,” said Matt Hammer, Colfax Public Works director. Culverts and storm drains are the subject of attention for county and city crews around Whitman County this week as thoughts of melting snow approach. Fire cews battle in freezing conditions Sunday to contain a house fire in Colfax. For more pictures see page 10A. A Sunday afternoon fire destroyed an early-day house which had been converted into six apartments on the S. 900 block of East Street in Colfax. The fire left 10 occupants of the house homeless. Whitman County is looking to establish policies and procedures regarding intergovernmental loans and has put a moratorium on loans until those guidelines can be established. “We’re trying to get our ducks in a row,” said Mark Clinton, county treasurer.
