The City of Palouse and the state’s Department of Ecology have received a court order for a prospective consent decree for purchase of contaminated property along Main Street in Palouse. Roy Gene Carter, 48, Albion, was sentenced to a year in jail with all but seven days suspended after pleading guilty in superior court Jan. 6 to charges of fourth degree assault and trespassing. Carter was credited with two days time served after he was arrested last Aug. 27. He was ordered to serve the remaining five days in jail. Carter was arrested after a deputy responded to a report of an intoxicated man who was trespassing on a neighbor’s property in Albion. Three weeks after starting a second term on the Colfax City council, Jeremiah Roberts Tuesday night announced he was resigning his seat on the council. Roberts said he was ending his city council career due to “unforseen circumstances.” He then got up and left the meeting before the start of the business part of the meeting. A Kansas fund spent $13.6 million last week to purchase a 25 percent share in bad loans from the Bank of Whitman portfolio. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which shut down Bank of Whitman in August, set up a limited liability corporation to hold 62 loans that had an unpaid balance of $101 million from the Colfax-based bank. Mariner Real Estate Partners III, based in Leawood Kansas, announced in a press release Jan. 11 it had outbid eight other firms for the share of Bank of Whitman loans. Losing money inspecting farm structures, Whitman County is considering increases to its fees to permit those buildings. Building Official Dan Gladwill reported to county commissioners Tuesday he collected $2,700 in fees to permit ag structures. Those same buildings, if permitted without the ag exemption would have generated around $17,000 in fees. In 2009, responding to limits set by the legislature, Whitman County reduced its fees to permit ag buildings so farmers paid only Gladwill’s time on the permit and his fuel to inspect the buildings. A Food Bank has come to Palouse, and Annette Klover, its co-founder/director knows the cause firsthand. Opening at the new community center on the fourth Wednesday of each month, the Palouse Food Bank was spearheaded in part by Klover. Her path to the effort stretches from Long Beach, Calif., through Clarkston, Asotin and finally Pullman and Palouse. Klover raised two children on three jobs, peanut butter, eggs and oatmeal. Lawyers began looking into the legality of Whitman County’s agreement with Hawkins Companies this week, while one of the county’s most prominent businessmen said he was “shocked” by the deal. Residents of the Palouse were bracing for an epic blizzard expected to sweep the region Wednesday and Thursday. National Weather Service officials issued a two-day winter storm warning for the Palouse to cover Wednesday and Thursday.
