Colfax Bulldog wrestler Cody Evans placed third in the 16-team tournament at Orofino Saturday. Evans defeated Todd Marshall of Potlatch with an 8-1 decision in the consolation final at the tournament. The clash was a rematch of the consolation final at Pomeroy during the holiday break Evans lost to Jake Witherspoon of Elgin, Ore., in the semi-final round. Witherspoon was stopped by Carsen Fry of Lewiston in the champion match for the 125 class. Evans pinned Marshall in the second round and decisioned Broncheau of Orofino 17-3 in the prelim... EWU Seniors Matt Martin of LaCrosse and J.C. Sherritt of Pullman are among 52 winners of the 13th annual Academic All-Star Team selected by the Athletics Directors of the Football Championship Subdivision. Sherritt, a 2006 graduate of Pullman High, was also announced winner of the Buck Buchanan Award given to the top defensive player in FCS. The award, now in its 16th year, is selected by sportswriters, broadcasters and sports information directors from throughout the country. Riley Schell, tackle on the Tekoa/Oakesdale/ Rosalia Nighthawks team, has also been named to play in the east-west all-state game in Yakima June 25. Schell, a senior at Tekoa High School, will be in the east team lineup which will be headed by Coach Mike Morgan of Colfax. Mattea Tedde bagged a third place medal for St. John/Endicott Saturday at the Royal City rumble to wrap up a short high school wrestling career in the United States. An exchange student from Italy, Tedde decided to try wrestling and was making great progress. However, he is enrolled in a one semester exchange program. Coach Gary Newton credited his young team which showing progress as they begin to pick up more mat time. The Eagles are slated to compete at Warden tonight, Thursday. Colfax girls got off to a fast start Tuesday night on their home court to defeat Northwest Christian 46-39. The Bulldogs moved out to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter and managed to maintain the gap most of the way. The Tuesday win finished a 2-1 run for the Bulldog girls who are now 6-2 in the league race. They also hit the .500 mark for the overall season at 6-6 . Northwest Christian boys arrived in Colfax Tuesday night with a familiar cast and proved up on their claim to the top league spot with an undefeated league record. Cole Ramey, Kwinn Hanson, Reuben Clark and Co. played up to form in front of a big Colfax crowd for a 77-51 win in a match which featured the battle of the undefeated league teams. Colton big man Dustin Patchen stuffed the stat sheets over the weekend, leading his Wildcats to two SE League wins and solidifying their place in the two slot in league standings. Endicott grads plan 100-year reunion Plans are underway for an Endicott school reunion to mark the 100-year anniversary of the Endicott School. Three life-long friends, Carol Weitz Stueckle of Colfax, Vivian Hamilton Harder of Kahlotus and Diane Repp of Spokane are launching plans for the reunion. Stueckle and Harder are members of the Endicott HIgh School class of 1956, and Repp is a graduate of the class of 1957. Area Boy Scouts picked up almost seven tons of Christmas trees during their Jan. 8 collection drive. Whitman County Public Works Director Mark Storey reported Monday more than 13,800 pounds of Christmas trees crossed the scale at the county landfill. Daniel H. Christman A graveside service for Daniel H. Christman, 75, was Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Garfield Cemetery in Garfield. The Rev. Kathy L. Kramer officiated and Potlatch VFW post and a U.S. Army Honor Guard conducted military honors. Mr. Christman died Jan. 14, 2011. Dusty Last week Wednesday, Dusty BB Club met in the parish hall of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse to make baby blankets for the free maternity clinic at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. Al Liotta of Colfax celebrated his 90th birthday with an Italian dinner Saturday night at Hill Ray in Colfax. Attending were 14 of his 18 children, now all adults. The Liotta family, known as the BLTs, is made up of the Byrd, Liotta and Thompson children. Liotta, who came from the east coast to serve at WSU’s golfing professional, was a bachelor when some of his golfing friends, who were priests, introduced him to Jody Byrd.
