Carlsen plays for the students every Thursday, in his church band and plays the national anthem for Endicott home games. Every Thursday,...

    Kara McMurray, Gazette Reporter|Jan 20, 2016

More than 635 million tickets were sold in 46 states prior to the Jan. 13 draw, according to lottoreport.com. Powerball fever also hit Whitman County last week as the largest Powerball prize in history drew near. The record Powerball grew to nearly $1.6 billion prior to the draw, because no tickets had been able to match all five numbers plus the Powerball number since Nov. 7,...

  • Don C. Brunell: Thanks, Dick

    Jan 20, 2016

Seattle lost an icon earlier this month when Dick Spady, the 92-year old founder of Dick’s Drive-In restaurants, died. He was an entrepreneur who took a risk, worked hard, treated his workers and customers well, sold an excellent product at an affordable price, and did his part to make his community and country a better place to live and raise a family. Dick Spady was a pacesetter in the fast food industry which developed a full-head of steam in the 1950s. He was quick to recognize a business opportunity and believed that people wanted a f...

Reasons for levy My name is Weston Claassen. I am a 1990 graduate of Colfax School District. I received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Biola University in 1994. This is where I met my wife Jennifer of twenty years. We married and she moved to our community to join me on our family farm. I am a proud fourth generation graduate of Colfax High School, so when I was asked to serve on the Committee for quality schools in support of the 2015 Colfax School Replacement Levy, I was excited to have this opportunity. Jennifer and I have five...

  • Rich Lowry: Ted Cruz Is Nixon, Not Goldwater

    Jan 20, 2016

The lazy conventional wisdom is that Ted Cruz is the new Barry Goldwater, doomed to suffer an electoral landslide defeat should he win the Republican nomination. Not only is this wrong about Cruz's general-election chances, it may compare Cruz to the wrong 20th-century Republican forebear. The better analogue for Cruz might be Richard Nixon, not in the crudely pejorative sense, but as another surpassingly shrewd and ambitious politician who lacked a personal touch but found a way to win nonetheless. First, all the caveats. Obviously and most...

  • Bob Franken: Oregon and Iowa

    Jan 20, 2016

Let's face it: Those guys who have taken over a federal building at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in remote eastern Oregon haven't exactly caused an uprising of support. Instead of rallying everyone around their cause -- which in case you don't know is to take back massive swaths of land from the U.S. government -- they've brought on mainly ridicule. Punsters have been having a field day, calling this self-styled armed militia group "Vanilla ISIS" or "Y'all Qaeda." Law-enforcement officials have thus far chosen not to drag them out, and...

  • Two Dollars

    Kara McMurray, Gazette Reporter|Jan 20, 2016

Last week, the news could hardly be turned on without hearing talk of the Powerball as it surged to its largest prize in its history, soaring to nearly $1.6 billion – a number so large that it did not even fit on Powerball billboards which were designed years ago to cap out at $999 million. It seemed as though everyone wanted a piece of the prize, and hopes were high across the nation as people forked over $2 to buy their ticket and then dream of the possibilities of quitting jobs, paying off college debts, traveling the world and buying m...

  • Palouse energy audit results discussed

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Jan 20, 2016

An energy audit is in for Palouse, and the town will now decide whether to make recommended changes. Apollo Systems of Spokane contacted city hall in November to offer a free evaluation of Palouse’s energy systems. After two snow delays, company representatives came to town in December and submitted a report. In it they noted a few lights that had not been converted to LED in a recent project and a deficient well pump at the city shop. “Relatively speaking, these are minor,” said City Clerk...
