Improving Highway 167 could help change the face of global commerce and the future of Washington state. Really. Traffic congestion is causing bottlenecks at our ports, creating costly delays for the shippers that use Puget Sound ports. Failing to eliminate that congestion will make our ports less competitive, costing us jobs, business and tax revenues. That is true now more than ever. This legislative session, the transportation improvements to be voted on by legislators in Olympia are linked to world trade and events in Panama, 3,600 miles... Full story

To my knowledge, this memo has not been sent, but it should: From: Top Republican Officials To: Party 2014 Candidates People: Don’t do or say anything stupid. That is all. And from the same guy, a note to the GOP members of the House and Senate seeking re-election: A “do-nothing Congress” is a good thing. Or as one of them, Rep. Charlie Dent, told The New York Times: “It’s pretty clear to me in the House, we don’t want to make ourselves the issue.” Unless they make themselves the issue by going crazy doing something like forcing the nation in...

At the end of Sunday’s NFC Championship game, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman’s antics exposed him to the nation as the classless loudmouth he was already known to be in the northwest. But he’s also smart. He went to Stanford, where football coach David Shaw adamantly says the school does not lower entrance standards for athletes. He wasn’t the head coach then but there’s no reason to think Stanford’s policy was different just a few years ago than it is now. What Sherman was right about was that 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick... Full story

  • Palouse council discusses options after levy failure

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Jan 22, 2014

The Palouse City Council discussed what its next efforts may be to add to the town’s fire equipment reserve fund Jan. 14. The matter came up after the failure of a levy lid lift proposal in November by one vote. The measure would have raised the town’s property tax baseline in order to direct more money to the fire department’s reserves. Instead of Palouse’s current tax rate of $2.49 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the ballot measure would have raised it to $3.10 per $1,000. The effect... Full story

    Sally Ousley, Gazette Reporter|Jan 22, 2014

The main elevator in the courthouse broke down late last week putting those who could not use the stairs to get to the second floor headed in the direction of the jail. The elevator has not been upgraded since the courthouse was built in 1954 and if something breaks on it, parts are more and more difficult to find, said Bob Reynolds, county facilities and maintenance manager. Those not able to use the stairway were asked to notify a member of the assessor’s staff in the office near the elevator. They were escorted to the jail’s elevator and... Full story

The state Attorney General last week formally stated that cities and counties can outlaw recreational marijuana businesses, even though voters approved I-502 legalizing marijuana in 2012. Gray-black in color, the all-armored steel “Peacekeeper” vehicle carried 13 men standing on an iron bar on either side carrying AR-15 rifles. They stopped behind Columbia Bank. The camouflaged group jumped off the rails in silence and marched in a line, guns pointed from their shoulders. Inside the bank, they didn’t know what they would face other than a hostage situation.
