These reports are from the previous four issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Some accounts have been updated. HOSPITAL WILL COVER WALKWAY A building permit for a 41-foot walkway canopy was issued Jan. 26 to Whitman Hospital and Medical Center. Outraged Please add my name to the list of those outraged at the actions of the County commissioners in dealing with the pending development near Moscow, ID. It is irresponsible to conduct business in such a manner. How can the chairman believe he is justified in his actions to not allow public input? Who pays the bills? Who is responsible for his actions? All of the authority, but none of the responsibility. Typical of the trend in government these times. I have asked the Dept. of Public Works several times to repair roads in my area and get...

  • Don Brunell: What a relief- power's back on

    Feb 2, 2012

An old TV commercial for an antacid once asked heartburn sufferers, “How do you spell relief?” For thousands of western Washington people left in the dark by winter storms, the word is “p-o-w-e-r.” And it took more than a couple of Rolaids to deal with it all. Normally, we flip a switch and the lights come on. We think nothing of it until a storm knocks out our power. Then we realize how important electricity is to our everyday lives. The Pacific Northwest periodically experiences heavy snow, ice storms and high winds, but generally not all...

  • Rich Lowry: The Republican Clinton

    Feb 2, 2012

The primary ended the Thursday before the voting, at around 8:05 p.m. That’s when Newt Gingrich stopped berating CNN’s John King for asking him about his ex-wife Marianne’s allegation that he wanted an “open marriage.” Newt’s reply was a virtuoso display of bluff and indignation. He angrily dismissed her account as false, even though the balance of evidence suggests it’s true. He summoned dubious evidence in his defense, saying all their mutual friends knew Marianne’s charge was untrue, although there could have been no witnesses to a...

  • Gordon Forgey: Citizens do count

    Feb 2, 2012

The news is not good for the county. Four county representatives on two different trips have travelled to Olympia to find financing for the county’s commitment to the Hawkins Mall project. The first envoys—led by Commissioner Greg Partch—reported that their trip last week was a positive and productive one. They just were not able to find much support or a source of the $15 million needed. Commissioner Pat O’Neill followed the others to Olympia this week. He wanted to talk to a former neighbor who just happens to be working on a $1 billion... Full story

Wrestlers from eight teams invaded the Colfax mats Thursday for a three-hour show. Aim of the meet for the competitors was to build up their records in advance of seeding for the elimination rounds. After the Colfax stop, the grapplers had one more outing at Tri-Cities Prep Saturday to finish out the pre-elimination part of the season. Pomeroy’s veteran team collected a stack of wins Thursday on the mats at Colfax. The orange crew posted a strong showing in most of the weight classifications. Tory Knebel, Pomeroy’s dominator in the 170 cla...

    Feb 2, 2012

Colfax Heavyweight Daython Maltone booked a second round pin over David Martinez of Warden Saturday at Tri-Cities Prep to finish the regular season with a 19-2 record. Colfax, St. John, and Garfield Palouse will all have wrestlers in the Warden show which starts with a 16-man bracket. With two rounds to go, Colton and Rosalia look like they have locked up the top two slots in the SE girls race. The two leaders collided Saturday at Colton in the second round with the Wildcats again dominating. Undefeated Colton now has a four-game gap on the field and Rosalia has a two-game edge. The undefeated Wildcats actually stacked four more wins since last Wednesday when they made up two snow dates. In addition to the 63-26 win over the Spartans in the Saturday round, they pegged wins over LaCrosse/Washtunca last Wednesday, over...

  • Reardan puts lock on B-C top slot

    Feb 2, 2012

Reardan’s girls Friday night took zero prisoners when they crunched Colfax 65-43 to remain on a glide path to an undefeated finish in the Bi-County league. Led by 31 points from Kelsey Moos, the Indians led all the way Friday night on their home court. The win over Colfax and another crunch over Springdale Saturday night left the Indians odd-on favorites to take the league race with three rounds left. Colfax returned home Saturday for a 69-31 runaway win over the sixth-place Lind/Ritzville/Sprague Broncos, and they finally hit the road to K...

  • Colfax boys bounce back, face big trip to NWC land

    Feb 2, 2012

Colfax boys cooked a 2-1 mark over the last five days to wrap up a record run of action over the two weeks. Colfax finished the run with a twice-postponed trip Tuesday to Kettle Falls where they defeated the last place K-dogs 58-38 to move their league record to 10-2 with three more games left on the schedule. Included in that run of three will be a Saturday trip to Colbert where the Bulldogs will take another shot at denting the undefeated string of league-leading Northwest Christian, now 18-0. He grew up a backyard technician in Dublin, Calif., 35 minutes from Cupertino and the heart of Silicon Valley. He remembers when, as a boy, his friend’s dad who worked at IBM came home with old computer punch cards, and showed pictures of dual floppy-disc personal c...
