    Defeats in close hoop battles Friday and Monday sent the Bulldog boys to the brink of elimination at the NE district playoff at Mead. Colfax Wednesday afternoon faced Reardan in the second round of the NE after battling Northwest Christian in the first round Monday.     The largest wrestling show in several years will hit Colfax Saturday when area B teams arrive for the sub-regional round of state eliminations leading to the Mat Classic finals at Tacoma. Wrestlers from as many as 12 teams are expected to compete in the Colfax event. Total number of wrestlers is expected to be in the 90 range.     The subject of a pile of debris at the Garfield compost site has come up as an issue in the first weeks of new mayor Ray McCown’s term. The town hasn’t had a burn permit in a year and half after a smoldering pile drew a complaint which led to a Notice of Correction from the Washington State Department of Ecology.     On Thursday, Jan. 31, Whitman County Relay for Life kicked off its annual fundraiser with a spaghetti dinner at the Colfax Baptist Church. Although only 35 people were served that evening, organizers termed it a success. “We were very pleased,” said one of the organizers, Cozy Lueck. Although they served more people last year, Lueck said they knew other events were going on the same night and didn’t expect as many people.     Last week, she got her driver’s license renewal notice in the mail.   • End of a year-long trial saga: Judge sentences Daniel Lazcano to 27 years

    Spokane Superior Court Judge Maryann Moreno sentenced Daniel Lazcano to 27 years in prison Friday afternoon in Whitman County Superior Court. The Spokane judge noted the prison term was longer than the term assigned to Lazcano’s older brother, Frank, but she said she believes the difference was appropriate. Before pronouncing the sentence, Judge Moreno checked on the sentence which had been assigned to Frank Lazcano after he was convicted of felony murder by a Whitman County jury last March.
