The City of Palouse’s effort to hire a new officer continues after a potential hire, an applicant from the Seattle area and originally from Biloxi, Miss., did not accept the offer in January after an expenditure of $950 on his background check and testing. Whitman County Treasurer Mark Clinton gave a 2017 tax report to county commissioners Monday. Collections totaled $52,015,376.20 for the property tax roll with a 97.68 percent rate of collection. He noted 2017 tax refunds for the county totaled $14,734.99, a number which also includes money from previous years, depending on certain entities with exempt status. “As of Dec. 31, I don’t see any uncollectable personal property taxes at this point,” Clinton said. An order of deferred prosecution regarding the 2016 fire that burned pasture and crop land on both sides of the Snake River was filed last Thursday in Garfield County. Under terms of the order, Garfield County Prosecutor Matt Newburg agreed to drop charges against the three WSU students who are charged with starting a fire that eventually covered an estimated 11,000 acres on both sides of the Snake River. Whitman County Elections Supervisor Karen Bafus has resigned and will depart the staff as of Friday. Bafus said under conditions of her new employment opportunity she could not stay on staff here past Friday. Bafus has been employed with the county for close to 13 years. Debbie Hooper, the previous elections supervisor, resigned last June after 15 years of service to the county.
