Port commissioners at their regular meeting last Thursday, Feb. 2, authorized executive director Joe Poire to pursue the purchase of the cabin. High winds in November of 2010 damaged a mobile home that had been used to house workers at the park. The roof was ripped off, leaving the building destroyed. The Pullman police report said they responded to a report Saturday at 3:40 a.m. to an apartment on Providence Court. • Letters

    Feb 9, 2012

What to do This Hawkins thing seems to be on most people’s minds. Most folks seem to be upset with the Commissioners over it. I’m going to suggest, if not a solution, at least something to do about it. First I’d like to say that I believe that the commissioners want to do what is best for the people. What they did was not with malicious intent. They firmly believed that what they did would work out for the county’s benefit. They may still believe it. We’ll never know if it would have worked out well because it looks like it will never be...

  • Building fees go up for farm structures, down for turbines

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Feb 9, 2012

Whitman County set a new slate of fees in place Monday for permits to build farm structures and wind turbines. County commissioners unanimously approved the new fees proposed by Dan Gladwill, county building official, during their regular meeting. The state legislature in 2009 limited fees counties could collect to inspect farm buildings. Before Monday’s approval, farm buildings were charged permit fees that were calculated by figuring Gladwill’s actual expenses to inspect the building; his time, travel and fuel costs. Now, Gladwill will cha...

  • High school art teachers want show in courthouse

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Feb 9, 2012

Three local art teachers asked Whitman County commissioners Monday to let them use the courthouse halls to display their students’ art. Teachers Patty Mills of Oakesdale, Sean Moss of Rosalia and Cheryl Lothspeich of Colfax pitched the idea of having art displayed in the courthouse and judged by county officials. “You can see it all on its own for their own aesthetic value,” Mills told commissioners. All three said the display would provide students a different perspective on the impact of their art. “The great thing is, this gets their a...

  • Hop-along Boy

    Feb 9, 2012

    W. Bruce Cameron Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2006. Though I’m generally a responsible parent, I didn’t really become concerned about my son’s ability to get into a good college until I saw his grades in pre-school. His academic performance was mostly satisfactory. He received smiley faces in Listens to Story Time, Holding a Pencil and Hanging Up His Jacket. His teacher wrote glowingly that my son had “stopped eating the paste” and was “very good with glitter.” This made me proud — some of the most important l...

  • Don Brunell: When it comes to taxes, keep it simple

    Feb 9, 2012

“Keep it simple.” This old saying is more than a bumper sticker slogan, it's a principle that is especially important when it comes to taxes and regulations. Washington employers have been working for decades to simplify our state's tax and regulatory policies. Currently, employers must work their way through a maze of complex, overlapping and often contradictory regulations and tax rules that differ from one city to the next, one county to the next. It’s like playing a game that has 50 different sets of rules. Wrestling with those costl...

  • Rich Lowry: The Last WASP

    Feb 9, 2012

Mitt Romney summoned all the righteous indignation he could muster after a Newt Gingrich ad called him “anti-immigrant.” Romney blasted the ad shortly afterward in an interview: “It’s just inappropriate.” “Inappropriate.” For Romney, that qualifies as a stinging rebuke. He also regretted in the strongest possible terms the Gingrich ad’s “terrible terms.” The Republican campaign now pits a man, in Newt Gingrich, expert at channeling and expressing emotions against a man, Mitt Romney, who can’t or won’t. “I have emotion and passion,” Romney said...

  • Gordon Forgey: The game was not enough

    Feb 9, 2012

The Super Bowl broadcast Sunday generated the largest television audience in history. More than 110 million viewers watched the New York Giants squeak out a win against the New England Patriots. An amazing 170 million people watched the game for at least seven minutes. That is roughly half the population of the United States. The game is over now. Eli Manning, the winning quarterback and MVP, has already been to Disneyland. The victorious Giants have already been feted with a parade in New York City. The game is over, but the national letdown l...

  • STRANGE BUT TRUE

    Samantha Weaver|Feb 9, 2012

It was American author James Thurber who made the following sage observation: “Humor is emotional chaos remembered in tranquility.” If you’re a fan of the original “Wizard of Oz” movie, you might be surprised to learn that the actress who played Glinda the Good Witch, Billie Burke, was 54 years old when the film was shot. The award for the most needless war in history could very well go to Paraguay, whose president, Francisco Solano Lopez, believed himself to be an excellent tactician. He was a great admirer of Napoleon Bonaparte and wished to...
