Claire Thornton, a WSU junior from Tonasket, is seeking information about the impact of the GI Bill at the university, then Washington State College, in preparation for writing an honors program thesis. In the immediate years following World War II, the program resulted in a boom in student population and influx of veterans on campus. Thornton would like to interview veterans or nonveteran graduates from the years 1945-1952. She would also like to obtain information from spouses, children and friends of alumni and professors...
Total precipitation in January at the Colfax NRCS office was 2.15 inches, according to weather observer David Jones. Average for January at Colfax is 2.33 inches. Jones reported Thornton received 3.45 inches of precipitation in January and Pullman received 2.55 inches. Those places, he said, were above average. Despite the slightly below average precipitation, Jones said the outlook for farmers is favorable. “It does look pretty good,” he said. “Most of the water is going into the ground, and we haven’t had frozen ground.” The average r...

In January, the American Association of Railroads or AAR published its first-ever state of the railroads annual report focusing on the industry’s economic value, innovations and emphasis on safety. The nation’s railroads have been around for about 180 years and maintain 180,000 miles of track. Trains move over 51 million tons of freight each day which is about 40percent of the nation’s freight. Rail has been a vital transportation link in Pacific Northwest since 1883. That year President Ulysses S. Grant drove in the final "golden spike" in we...
Colfax Amazing Val Gregory, unified executive director working for several different organizations, is the most extraordinary person that I have ever met. She is doing for this community more than anyone has done before. Her talents go in every direction. Val’s ability to research and formulate ideas and bring to fruition ways to put Colfax in the spotlight is absolutely amazing. She has energized others to be a part of her endeavors. I am sure that Val is not paid enough to compensate her for her time and efforts. She is supposed to be part t...
Who can possibly govern a country where the name "United States" is an illusion? There is little united about us, not when it comes to politics. In both parties, we have candidate lineups that make the WWE look authentic by comparison, except that the wrestlers are not as weird as the candidates. How else should we describe the bizarros in that recent tag-team match, otherwise known as the Republican debate? Actually, the star of that circus was the clown who didn't show up: Donald Trump, the modern reincarnation of P.T. Barnum. What a...
We live in the age of working-class discontent, which, if it wasn't obvious before, has been made plain by the passions roiling 2016 presidential politics. The media's preferred description of the average Republican voter has often been "the angry white male." This was crudely simplistic and meant to be pejorative. If the press wants to update the descriptor, it should refer to "the despairing white male." Or more accurately, the despairing white working class. White working-class life in America has been in a slow-motion disintegration for dec...
Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, is the first community to vote in the state’s primary election. The registered voters arrive before midnight, so they are ready to cast their ballots at the first tick of election day. The community has had a 100 percent voter turnout for decades. This year, all nine Dixville Notch voters cast their votes. Bernie Sanders won on the Democratic side. John Kasich won on the Republican side. It’s a quaint tradition. Not so quaint a tradition is the inordinate effort of presidential candidates to win in two non...

Former Colton High star Josh Straughan will transfer from NCAA Division II Stillman College after playing at quarterback to Southern Illinois, a Football Championship Subdivision school division AA school in Carbondale which competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Straughan's transfer is under the NCAA's graduate transfer rule, which allows a player at a school without a graduate program, or one in their major, to transfer to another school and be eligible immediately as opposed to the customary one-year waiting...

They talk about hunting, cattle and fishing with their coach, who fishes in the summers and traps in the winter for a living. They play a lot of Madden on their phones. They started 0-8. It led to parent meetings, questions from Colton fans and trying other things for their second-year coach, and it turned one night in practice. Jason Shull stepped into the gym two days after the eighth-graders joined the team. “Have you touched the net?” the coach asked Kian Ankerson, after he made a cou...

When incorrect ballots listing Tekoa's school levy were discovered in Oakesdale mailboxes after ballots were sent out two weeks ago, Oakesdale Superintendent Jake Dingman became worried about his school's levy. “I was upset that morning,” he said. “That is 28 percent of my budget.” It soon came to light that the ballot mishap included 25 Tekoa ballots which had been mistakenly sent to Oakesdale voters. Dingman said he brought the error to the attention of the Whitman County Elections office, and the process was then underway to begin correct...
Interior work at the new Dahmen Barn addition has resumed after time off due to weather and a wait for funding. What remains to be done is electrical work which is underway, followed by framing and fin...
Rail work at the Port of Wilma in Clarkston is moving along, Port of Whitman County staffer Kara Riebold reported last week at the Port meeting. The rail rehabilitation project began in late November with the intention to upgrade crossings at the railroad, replace railroad ties, add new rail and pour asphalt around the crossings. Since then, the work has been moving along but has also faced weather delays. “Weather didn't allow the asphalt,” Riebold told the Gazette. “As soon as asphalt opens, we can pour the asphalt.” The project has also be...

Bryant said his campaign is “going great.” “The Elway Poll was released about two weeks ago, and he’s in trouble,” Bryant said. “Inslee is about 39 percent average, and I’m around 30 or...

Konnor Stirling and his mom Janel embrace at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where Konnor is currently being treated for leukemia. Janel and her husband, Tom, have been staying with Konnor in Seattle. A common sight in the hallways of the Colfax Junior-Senior High School are orange ribbons pinned to student’s clothing, a reminder that one of their classmates is still fighting. Konnor Stirling, 14-year-old son of Tom and Janel Stirling, has been battling leukemia since he was diagnosed with the can...
