Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. There are three types of bicycles: There’s the kind of bike built for riding on the roads, there’s the kind of bike built for riding on the trails, and there’s the kind of bike built for storing in my garage. When my friend Joel offered to let me ride with his “Morning Road Bike Club,” I very enthusiastically declined. I explained to him that there is just something offensive to me about the word “morning.” Besides, owning my kind of bicycle means that its tires are flat...

The Seattle Times headline said it all: “Obama running out of reasons to reject Keystone XL.” For five years, the Keystone XL pipeline has been mired in studies, red tape and delay. Now, the State Department has released its final report, concluding that the pipeline would have little or no environmental impact. The State Department has jurisdiction because the pipeline would cross the U.S. border, carrying 800,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Western Canada to Nebraska, where it would connect with an existing pipeline to refineries in Tex... Full story

Why would anyone think it was a big deal when scientists announced a few weeks ago they had determined that humans carry genes of Neanderthals? Was there really any question? The evidence is everywhere. It's certainly obvious when we observe the hunter-gatherer predators who run roughshod over each other in the political world. It would be a mistake to stereotype Neanderthals as grunting lunklumps. In fact, some of them appear quite suave. Mike Huckabee, for example, was outfitted in knuckle-drag recently when, before a Republican audience, he...

The preliminary election count was tallied Tuesday night. The next count will be Friday. Even so, most issues can be declared successfully passed. Every Maintenance and Operations levy for every school district on the ballot passed comfortably. Not one ran into trouble with the voter. Voters in the county long ago wanted more for their schools and have traditionally given them extra, local funding. Also on the plus side, the Whitman County Library District and Pullman Regional Hospital levies passed with substantial positive margins. Still up...

  • Gar-Pal beats Pomeroy again, takes league title, playoff seed

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Feb 12, 2014

They ran out of programs. In the biggest game of the season Friday night in Palouse, Gar-Pal took on Pomeroy for a matchup between the top two teams in 1B Southeast District 9. The second-place Vikings came into the game with recent wins over Touchet and Colton, avenging their two earlier league losses. First-place Pomeroy had lost only once all season – on a half-court shot by Vikings’ guard Matt Holbrook in their gym. In the rematch, it would take less than that, as Gar-Pal opened a small lea...

  • English WWII museum features escape tale

    Linda Marler, Gazette Correspondent|Feb 12, 2014

The story of John Ellis of Colfax and his B-17 bomber crew ditching in the English Channel is a centerpiece of a museum now at Rougham Field in East Anglia, England. The museum was in its beginning phases after World War II when a British fishing boat brought up an aircraft engine in its nets. The numbers on the engine matched the numbers on “Hello Mr. Maier” which was ditched July 31, 1944. When people from Colfax or John’s relatives visit the museum, they are treated grandly, and the museum vo... Full story

  • Supt. Morgan revives Colfax wood shop

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Feb 12, 2014

They stood quiet for six years. At Colfax High School, other than being used for maintenance, the various band saws, scroll saws, lathes and sanders in the school’s wood shop haven’t been used since the retirement of Bruce MacDougal in 2008. In the meantime, the 84x40-foot area became a storage room, for broken student desks, teachers’ desks and pallets of paper. Over Christmas break, that all changed as Colfax Supt. Michael Morgan and a few student helpers began to clear out the space to bring... Full story
