Colfax girls hit their groove for an amazing finish Monday night to take a two-point overtime win over a tough Northwest Christian team and advance to Friday night’s championship game against Reardan. The Bulldogs trailed by 11 points going into the final quarter of Monday night’s semi-final round and roared for 21 points in the last period to tie the Crusaders at 44-44 in regulation time. Whitman County Parks Board seeks to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Jim Sharp of Rosalia. Mr. Sharp, who was appointed to the board in January 2009, died Dec. 20. The board is particularly interested in filling the seat with an applicant from the north and western parts of the county, areas which are under-represented on the board. However, any interested county resident is invited to apply. During the summer months, the board meets at the parks. Claiming the title of “Princess Buttercup,” seven-year-old Angelina Widman, back, brought in to the Gazette office, along with her younger siblings Reed and Sofia, the first buttercups of the season last Thursday, Feb. 9, claiming the 2012 Gazette buttercup Sweepstake prize. Angelina has won the Buttercup grand prize, a U.S. dollar bill, for the past five years. Colfax School District has refinanced its callable 2003 bonds in order to take advantage of lower interest rates. The refinancing will save district taxpayers more than $290,000 during the next eight years. Colfax Supt. Michael Morgan emphasized the savings to taxpayers will be realized through reduced tax levies for the bond redemption fund. “This is a direct savings to our community members in the form of taxes they expected, but will not have to pay,” Morgan said. Whitman County’s building department’s new schedule of fees for building permits on ag structures will be based on a valuation average of $7.50 per square foot. Whitman County commissioners selected Spokane attorney Milton Rowland Monday to represent the county in the injunction suit filed by the Organization to Void Illegal Conduct. “He’s very well respected in Spokane. I think he could represent us quite well,” Commissioner Greg Partch told his fellow commissioners Pat O’Neill and Michael Largent in a workshop session Monday morning. Hardy Gymnasium in Endicott will be packed to the rafters this weekend as SE basketball teams decide which four teams advance to the next round of the state 1B playoffs. Charred and blackened under the burnt beams and collapsed roof of a Colfax storage shed were four four-wheelers, a Model A hot rod, two boats, a trailer and a 1999 Porsche Carrera. All were destroyed last Wednesday night by a three-hour fire which also destroyed the storage building off the Walla Walla Highway just west of Colfax. The hot fire was fueled by the contents of the vehicle tanks, and the long battle was hampered by its location which lacked hydrants.
