Some accounts have been updated. MAYOR: STATE WILL GET BILL Mayor Todd Vanek Monday vowed the state Department of Transportation will get a “hefty bill” for the flood damage and cleanup sustained by Colfax in the Feb. 12 downtown flood. He said initial contact with state officials when the flooding started drew scant response from DOT crews. Vanek said he’s certain fill rocks,...
Here are a few observations by a guy watching the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics so far. One of the additions this year is the slopestyle events in snowboarding and skiing. The U.S. did exceptionally well in both, including a sweep of the medals for the men in skiing. While that was great news, it unintentionally highlighted a curious move by the International Olympic Committee. Slopestyle is another addition to the snowboard and style-based skiing events, which have been added in the recent era...

With another wide-margin victory in their gym Saturday night – this time a District Nine playoff win to send them to the championship game – the Vikings added another in a string. Last week, they dismantled Pomeroy in the biggest game of the season while the week before they did the same to Colton, aveng...

There may or may not be a complication with the proposed site for the Palouse skate park. The spot across from Hayton Greene Park is on a plat of ground that is subject to a still-current grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology for the planting of trees and brush in 2008. The skate park would infringe on a part of the planting site. The grant was set up to be eligible for 10 years with $272 remaining in the fund. “I don’t have a lot of information that’s definitive,” said skate p...

Whitman County commissioners Tuesday said they were grateful for what now looks like voters’ approval of the 22-cent levy lid lift measure in the Feb. 11 election. The measure after counting additional ballots Friday gained a few more ticks on the required 50 percent approval rate with most of the big support in Pullman precincts. “I thank the people for passing it, but I’m aware of how close it was, and we will be careful how we spend the money,” said Commissioner Art Swannack. “We will not go for another levy lift, not in the next three yea...
One more change in the Rosalia sports scene next year will be the absence of Ray Bernard, the long-time “Voice of the Spartans.” Bernard, who started announcing Spar-tan sports events at Rosalia in 1983, decided this last year of Spartan sports would be a good year to wrap it up. “I just figured it’s the right time,” Bernard explained. Next year, a new Rosalia/Tekoa combination team will move into the NE 2B league which will set it apart from most of Whitman County foes which have been a pa... Full story
—Brenton Cammack photo Water streams down Canyon street as machinery tried to move it away from downtown buildings in Colfax on Feb. 12. The quick melt on frozen ground caused flooding and property damage in many locations in the county. At Colfax, where state crews worked late Monday to remove a problem culvert installation on Canyon Street hill... Full story
