Historical Society The late Joyce Bryan of Colfax was honored posthumously with the Distinguished Service Award at the Whitman County Historical Society’s annual meeting. Bryan, who died in June of last year, served on the society’s board of directors for many years as corresponding secretary. She volunteered in many capacities for the Perkins House in Colfax. Rich and Janet (Neuenschwander) Hilty, formerly of Colfax, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren and friends in Nampa, Idaho, where they have made their retirement home. Both graduates of Colfax High School, they were married Dec. 24, 1961, at the United Methodist Church in Colfax. Both attended Eastern Washington State College where Rich graduated in 1962. Greta Stueckle was born in Colfax and has spent her entire life living in Colfax and the surrounding Whitman County farms, never straying too far from the land where she has worked to support herself and her family. When Greta married Dick, they worked many farms in Whitman County until they purchased a ranch in Dusty 50 years ago. Dick died in August after a long battle with cancer. Greta now spends many days busily sorting through decades of collected items on the ranch and has found Craigslist as a wonderful tool in cleaning out. She said...

A wild week of windy weather whipped Whitman County last week. Storms began Wednesday, with a severe windstorm sweeping through, bringing gusts of more than 60 mph that damaged homes across the Palouse, including the hot tub room of Pete and Margaret Leonard of Rosalia, pictured above center. Trooper Jim Retzer of the Washington State Patrol detachment in Colfax has been named trooper of the year for District 4 which includes seven counties in eastern Washington with headquarters in Spokane and offices in Ritzville and Colville in addition to Colfax. The hiring process for a new Colfax Police Chief started this week with civil service advertisements for the opening. Chief Bill Hickman, who has been a member of the police department since 1998, has submitted notice that he plans to retire later this spring, according to Mayor Todd Vanek. Deadline for applicants to file for the chief’s job will be March 26. Hickman was named chief of the department in June of 2006 after the retirement of Chief Barney Buckley. With almost 2,000 pounds of food to offer, the new Palouse Food Bank marked its first distribution day last Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the new community center.
