    Survey results are in for the Uniontown-Colton community improvement effort. A total of 546 surveys were sent out by the Uniontown Community Development Association and 30 percent came back, according to WSU survey monitors. “We are so pleased we got so much response,” said Dale Miller, UCDA president.     The 2012 edition of the Directory of Elected and Appointed Officials, compiled by The League of Women Voters of Pullman, has just been released. The brochure is distributed free to the public. It contains contact information for all city and county elected officials including appointed members of boards and commissions.     Colfax Supt. Michael Morgan reported on plans for the two-month process to hire a new principal for Colfax High School at Monday night’s school board session. Resignation of Principal Gary Weitz, who has served the district since 2006, was accepted by the board at its previous meeting. He will depart at the end of the school year.     Pullman Kiwanis Club and the Associated Students of WSU have each donated $600 for the purchase of a Fatal Vision “Beer Goggles” kit to use in community education program by the Pullman Police Department. The kit will be used to simulate impairment caused by blood alcohol content. It can simulate impairment at distinct levels. Pullman officers made approximately 135 presentations to students in 2010.     Garfield and Palouse school boards at a joint meeting last Thursday, Feb. 23, approved continued consideration of combining fifth grades. Superintendents Bev Fox of Palouse and Zane Wells of Garfield will now seek teacher input on the proposal. A shared fifth-grade would expand the co-op between the two districts which now involves grades six through twelve.     Superior Court Judge David Frazier late Tuesday night gave Whitman County commissioners the authority to hire an outside attorney to represent the county in the injunction suit filed over the Hawkins shopping center. Tuesday’s ruling removes Frazier’s rejection of the lawyer proposal last week.     Steptoe's Friendly Mart is the town's one-stop shop for coffee, smokes, beer, groceries and slices of beef jerky. Friday it will also become the town's Village Post Office. Now, the Friendly Mart will sell stamps and flat-rate packages in addition to renting out mailboxes. Post boxes were installed Tuesday, as was a mailbox on the Friendly Mart's front step.
