A meeting of the Conservation of Palouse Prairie will be Thursday, March 13, in the Great Room of the 1912 Center in Moscow beginning at 7 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public. The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will accept comments on proposed changes to state hunting rules for deer, elk, moose and other game species during a public meeting Friday and Saturday in Moses Lake. The commission, which sets policy for the WDFW, will convene at 8 a.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Moses Lake Civic Center, 401 S. Balsam Street in Moses Lake. With the Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Facility at Medical Lake continuing to operate at a loss because of low occupancy, members of the seven-county board in charge of the hall decided to revert to a set fee payment plan. The decision last week is intended to sustain the Martin operation for the balance of the year while the board considers the long-range fate of the operation. In order to use the Palouse compost facility for dumping leaves, grass and soft vegetation, Palouse residents must buy a 2014 permit at city hall. The 2013 permits, regardless of when purchased, are now expired. Each yard that dumps items requires a $15 permit.... Full story
Dog licenses for 2014 are now available in Palouse and required for all dogs three months or older kept within city limits. Dog licenses are valid Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, regardless of purchase date. The Community Garden Backyard Harvest program is looking to expand into other communities in the county. According to organizer Janelle Miller, the program was so successful in Colfax last year that organizers want to develop more gardens in other towns. Community Garden partnered with Peace Lutheran Church and located the Colfax garden on lots along Lake Street south of the church. A new phase of combatting mosquitoes in Farmington is set to begin this spring. After recent years of running into problems with fogging, the town will use tablets this year to kill larvae. The change began with Ron Dugan, who completed his term as mayor in December. “There’s all kinds of problems with it,” he said referring to mosquito fogging. Two Eastern Washington University students who died tragically in a car crash just outside of Colfax were remembered at a memorial service on Monday at the university. Nancy Zepeda and Ashley Gonzales, both 21, died instantly when the car they were riding in crashed into a semi truck on Highway 195 on the S curves early on Feb. 21.
