The estimate was made by Taylor Engineering who was signed by the city to study the project and come up with a cost estimate. Whitman County Library welcomes donations of lightly used DVDs, newer books in good condition or historic books. Donated items benefit the library system in a number of ways. Last year, the library was able to expand the cataloged materials collection with 661 donated items that had an estimated value of more than $8,000. According to Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick, the materials budget for the library was extended by 16 percent with the donations. Nancy Hawbaker Nancy C. Hawbaker, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at her family home near Palouse. A public service is not planned at this time. Born Sept. 1, 1936, in Onawa, Iowa, to Gilbert and Grace Barker Hedges, she moved with her family to Omaha, Neb., where she attended South High School and graduated from Gretna High School where she played on volleyball and basketball teams. Deanna J. Nagle Deanna J. Nagle, long-time Potlatch resident who had lived in Lewiston since 1989, died last Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho. A funeral mass was held Saturday, March 2, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Potlatch. A family urn burial at the Freeze Cemetery preceded the mass. 8 years ago March 9, 1888 F.A. Walpole, an artist with Lewis & Dryden printing company of Portland, Oregon, is in the city. He is engaged by the publishers of the Commoner to take sketches of Colfax which will be issued with our mammoth immigration edition. Five thousand copies of this edition will be issued in a few weeks, particularly devoted to general history and description of the Palouse country and its towns. Meet Bonnie Smith, Colfax Born and raised in North Dakota, Bonnie Smith attended Minot State Teachers’ College, now Minot State University, and taught for seven years before Warren Smith came and carried her off to Washington. She taught primarily in upper grades there. Warren and Bonnie lived in Wenatchee first and then at Wawawai where they managed a mobile home park. She stayed at home for 18 years to raise their three daughters, Jeanette Mackleit, Elizabeth Huber and Holly Hiatt. They enjoy their seven grandchildren and their activities. A...

Wired or Wireless was recently honored during a reception at the Malden Library to celebrate the conclusion of their two-year grant that provided 60 hours per week access to Malden’s library and computer center. Malden librarian Shannon Roe presented Wired or Wireless owner Bill Giebel and business manager Mike Puryear with Library Supporter of the Month honors. Dusty A week ago Tuesday, David and Phyllis Stueckle were in Kennewick to visit an old Navy buddy of David’s. It has been 60 years since the men last saw each other. The Stueckles also attended some of the state basketball tournament games in Spokane. Cooks were busy in the kitchen preparing sausage meals for the hundreds of hungry folks on Sunday at the 60th annual Uniontown Sausage Feed. Tables in the basement of the community center were packed as sausage lovers enjoyed their meals. Ken Oenning, “head of the whole she-bang,” said they made 1,750 pounds of sausage and fed between 1,300 and 1,400 people. The feed has been known to serve as many as 1,700 people. Residents, particularly in Colfax and Pullman, are reporting mail thefts and police are warning people to not leave mail in residential mail boxes. The Colfax Police Department noticed an increase in the incidents of mail thefts over the past few weeks, possibly related to tax return season, according to Colfax Police Chief Rick McNannay. Pullman police and sheriff’s deputies are also receiving reports of a higher than normal amount of mail thefts, Chief McNannay said. The idea of a walking/running/biking path between Colton and Uniontown reached a new stage with a meeting last Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.
