  • Letters March 10

    Mar 9, 2016

Why Caucus? The campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have showcased ideas and policies which will shape the future, but it is at the precinct level where the ideas that you support begin their journey to the Democratic Party’s platform. Washington Democrats have 109 delegates to send to the National Convention. Those delegates will not only elect the nominee, they will be debating the plans and ideas of the two campaigns. Delegates are allotted according to the percentage of Bernie and Hillary supporters who attend. So, if you would... Full story

  • Rich Lowry: Welcome to Europe

    Mar 9, 2016

Donald Trump will never be mistaken for a cosmopolitan, but he will bring a distinctively European flavor to the 2016 presidential election, should he win the Republican nomination. As in continental Europe, the two parties in a Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton race would accept the basic parameters of the welfare state, and the debate about the size of government -- so central to American politics for decades -- would fade to the background. No matter how appalled the left may be by Trump, his prospective takeover of the GOP would be a watershed...

  • Bob Franken: The ‘Dump Trump’ Movement

    Mar 9, 2016

Sure, he may be a racist, a misogynist, a dangerous demagogue who unleashes the worst instincts of scared, ignorant bigots, but there is one fact about him that suggests Donald Trump is not all bad: He has terrified his party's establishment. That is a good thing. These are the Republican muckety-mucks who for generations have been the paid protectors of their super-wealthy patrons, oftentimes resorting to a camouflaged version of the same ugliness. The difference is they've relied on polite code to exploit the intolerance. President Barack Oba...

  • Eight straight

    Mar 9, 2016

Once again Colton girls took the state championship in 1B basketball. This is the school's eighth straight championship. The girls have not been unbeatable, but they have been unstoppable. In fact, they have lost one game in three years. “Unstoppable” is one word to describe the dynasty. Another is “dominant.” Remember, this is high school. Every year students graduate and others come in as freshmen. The team is not the same as the one which started the championship streak eight years ago. Each year the Colton team had a different makeup.... Full story

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Mar 9, 2016

The team gathers before the fourth-place trophy presentation. Gar/Pal’s finish is the first state placing in seven years. The Gar/Pal boys suited up in Spokane and shed a cloak of disappointment. Making state after two years of heartbreak short of the goal, the 2015-16 team brings back the fourth-place 1...

  • Eight times a champion: Colton takes title

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Mar 9, 2016

Colton players walk toward the gold-ball presentation just after beating Republic in the 1B championship in Spokane. Zoe Moser eyes an opening to the basket for two of her 24 points against Republic in the state championship game. As an eighth-grade team manager at the state tournament, Zoe Moser inadvertently tossed a ball into an air duct and it disappeared. It proved like a coin in a slot, and Spokane Arena returned her four gold balls. The senior guard led her team to their eighth-straight 1...

  • County hearing set for 4 cluster re-zones

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Mar 9, 2016

Hearings are set for March 21 at 10 a.m. in the county commissioners chambers for four proposed cluster residential re-zones near Pullman. The potential change comes as a result of the county's tax sharing agreement with Pullman, which set a deadline of Dec. 31 of last year for cluster re-zoning – which allows landowners to develop land for houses. The new tax sharing plan permits no further clustering. The areas in question are all in an agriculture district around Pullman within a half-mile o...

  • Sol Vallarta gets new sign

    Mar 9, 2016

A new business sign was installed at Sol Vallarta Tuesday morning and afternoon. The old sign, which had been at the business for 23 years, was taken down and apart before being hauled away. The $7,000 bill for the sign was paid for by Pepsi, and the Pepsi logo takes up about a third of the new signage above the business logo. The new sign is also smaller. Juan Rodriguez, manager at Sol Vallarta, said this sign is about half the size of the original....

  • Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday morning

    Mar 9, 2016

Anyone looking to get some extra sleep this weekend may want to go to bed earlier than normal Saturday night. Clocks “spring forward” at 2 a.m. Sunday, meaning the hour jumps immediately to 3 a.m. and an hour of sleep is lost. Smartphones and computers are likely to automatically note the change, but other clocks will need to be set forward manually. The shift in the clocks will add an hour of daylight to the evening. Daylight Saving Time will end Nov. 6. First proposed in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin, Daylight Saving Time was not used until Wor...

    Kara McMurray, Gazette Reporter|Mar 9, 2016

An Albion resident is raising funds for the food pantry there, with the hope that the pantry can be better stocked to fit overall dietary needs. Ashley Tetzlaff, who moved with her husband and two daughters from Pullman to Albion two months ago, used money from her own pocket last month to help bring more of a variety of foods to the pantry for the families and individuals served. “My husband and I made a commitment when we were first married to set aside a certain amount of money each month to give away,” she said. “I actually used two months... Full story

    Kara McMurray, Gazette Reporter|Mar 9, 2016

Keely Campbell and Bryce Ryen stand in the hole between the Rosalia country store and Campbell’s restaurant. Campbell’s handwritten chalk menu takes up much of the space on one of the walls. Rosalia’s newest business and restaurant had such a successful March 1 opening night that proprietor Keely Campbell had to add an additional oven to meet the demand the next day. “It was insane,” Campbell said. “I had 40 to 50 people in the door at 5 p.m. The wait was long.” Campbell opened the doors to... Full story
