    Mar 12, 2014

Colfax girls brought home the state 2B basketball trophy Saturday after fighting off Toutle Lake in a dramatic finish to the three-days state show at the Spokane Arena. The Ducks, who extended their undefeated string the previous night by taking out Northwest Christian, staged a steady comeback in the title game after being blistered 12- 0 at the start of the championship game. Toutle actually cracked a one-point lead in the first two minutes of the last quarter, but the Bulldogs refused to fold...

  • Colton girls win sixth straight title

    Mar 12, 2014

For almost two quarters last Saturday it seemed possible that the world of 1B girls state basketball could turn upside town. Colton and Tekoa/Oakesdale, the one-two entry from the SE, paired off in the last of four B championship battles in the Spokane Arena, but unlike their three prior collisions the Nighthawks were keeping pace with the undefeated Wildcats. The two finalists had reached the championship game by contrasting approaches. Colton had advanced with two crushing wins, a 89-27 win...

In the waning moments of an intense fight Friday evening, the Nighthawks’ Olivia Pakootas hit a 10-foot shot with four seconds left to take them to the state final. There they met Colton. The championship game was the last one played at the state tournament. Tipping after 9 p.m. Saturday night, it was a time and place for s...

Gray wolves established four new packs and expanded their territory in the state over the past year, state wildlife managers told the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Commis-sion at a public meeting in Moses Lake Saturday, according to information released by WDFW. That assessment was based on an annual survey by WDFW that confirmed the presence of 13 wolf packs, five successful breeding pairs and at least 52 individual wolves in 2013. • Confirmed sighting: Zarings of Dusty pursue black wolf with pickup, camera

    Sally Ousley, Gazette Reporter|Mar 12, 2014

This time it’s not a rumor. A wolf was spotted near Dusty on March 6. It was an ordinary Thursday morning, a little before 8. Roger and Peggy Zaring, who live south of Dusty, had just come into the house from feeding their cattle when Roger looked out a window and saw an “enormous dog.” The dog, he soon realized, was a black wolf. Zaring said the cattle are in a pasture close to his house and the wolf was trotting across an alfalfa field close to the pasture. “It was very black and dark and was...

The stands for the kiosk signs are included for towns which were listed on the application for the grant which funds the project. The design is done, and the next step is to get bids for the signs and sign holders which will be done in the next couple of months. Sally Ousley, Gazette Reporter|Mar 12, 2014

Port of Whitman County commissioners March 6 approved a request to research the possibility to purchase a trash compactor for Boyer Park and Marina. Port Director Joe Poire told the commissioners that the trash compactor itself would cost almost $24,000. The entire project which includes a concrete slab, fence and lighting would cost about $40,000, he said. “We’ll place it upwind of the park,” Poire joked and then assured the commissioners there would be little or no odor. It will be placed west of the park, as far away from the campsites as it... Full story

  • Palouse will adjust budget

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Mar 12, 2014

The Palouse levy lid lift question which went to voters last November originally was announced as having failed by Palouse Mayor Michael Echanove. At the Feb. 25 city council meeting, however, he reported that it had been a misunderstanding about how much of a margin was required for it to pass. The measure needed just a 50 percent majority as opposed to the 60 percent required for special levy proposals. “It was just a misunderstanding,” said Echanove. “All things worked out fine.” The Palouse...
