Donald J. Miller The funeral services for Donald J. Miller, 58, was Friday, March 8, at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Burial followed at the Freeze Cemetery, north of Potlatch. Mr. Miller died March 4 from injuries sustained in a one-car rollover accident on Garfield Road north of Potlatch. Donald J. Stubbe Donald J. Stubbe, 74, retired U.S. Air Force veteran, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his home in Ellendale, Del. Services followed by firefighter honors were Friday, March 8, at the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Co. Born in St. John to Alvis H. and Edna Russet Stubbe, he was raised in St. John and graduated from St. John High School with the class of 1956. 8 years ago March 16, 1888 General T.R. Tannatt, general land agent of the O.R.&N. Co. at Farmington, has collected material for a 32 page pamphlet descriptive of the Palouse country. The matter is now in the hands of a Portland printing house and an edition of 8,000 will soon be printed, 2,000 of which will be distributed to California and the remainder in the east, the object being to induce immigration. Friends of Whitman County Library have announced the 2012-2013 Teen Advisory Board scholarship winners are Casey Hall of Colfax and Kayler Dub of Tekoa. Each will receive a $200 scholarship from proceeds from the annual Teen Dance sponsored each year by Whitman County 4H and the library’s teen department. The honorary Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is made up of Whitman County high school representatives nominated for their leadership, academic success and civic involvement. Whitman County Library’s 13th annual “Food for Fines” brought in donations from 138 residents who donated $900 in non-perishable food. Donations came in throughout Whitman County. Format of the drive allows library patrons to donate food in lieu of paying overdue fines. Almost one third of the donations were not attached to the waiving of library fines. Food for Fines is conducted each February when area pantries report more people are struggling with high heat bills... Full story
Jane Aune of Colfax will offer beginning bridge classes each Tuesday and Thursday in April from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Colfax High School. The free classes are open to anyone interested in learning the basic skills and etiquette of the game. A retired school teacher, Aune loves to play bridge and has taught many people to play the game. Lacrosse LaCrosse Community Outreach was unable to purchase the Thrift Shop building that was auctioned Feb. 15. At a recent meeting the group decided to not take any action until notified to vacate the premises. For now they are open for business and are still receiving goods from the community. Endicott Endicott/St. John Middle school students in olympia Sue Lynch, a middle school teacher from Endicott Middle School, and eight chaperones took 32 Endicott/St. John Middle School students on a field trip to Olympia, Seattle and Tacoma Feb. 18-20. It is not just the winter of Republican discontent. It will in all likelihood be the spring, summer and fall, as well. The national party is leaderless and nearly issueless, but besides that, is thriving and in fine fighting trim. The 2012-13 Southeast 1B League basketball season is complete and many county players earned All-League honors. The daughter of Tammy and Ignacio Mendoza, she represented Idaho in the age 12-13 bracket, because of the way the Elks designate the state boundaries for the contest. Tatiana won by making 23 of 25 free throws. Her total was the highest of any competitor among the girls and boys ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Colfax baseball players will launch the new season Saturday with a trip to the Asotin tournament. The Bulldogs are booked to play the Clarkston junior varsity at 9 a.m. for the season opener and then face off with Potlatch in a 1 p.m. game.
