The city of Tekoa will host an Association of Washington Cities (AWC) elected officials training session March 26 at 7 p.m. in city hall. Officials from all county towns are invited to the progam which will be presented by Roger Neal, AWC risk management specialist. Vacations of a short seasonal road south of Colfax and two road segments at Tilma east of Tekoa were approved March 4 by the county commissioners. The Cocking-Snyder Road is a short segment which intersects with the Parvin Road about a half mile east of Highway 195. The road at one time served a homestead in the area. Length of the road was .17 of a mile. Also approved for vacation were segments of the North Hangman Road and the Stateline Road at Tilma. A call for "all available officers" went out at 4:47 p.m. Monday from the Whitman County jail after an inmate allegedly assaulted an officer during meal service. Inmate Kerry E. Morrison, 26, was later arrested on a charge of custodial assault of a jailer by Deputy James Pellissier. According to the report, Officer Brett Keller and Jail Commander Scotty Anderson were serving dinner to inmates in the jail's orange section when Morrison stood up and hit Keller in the face. A pickup pulls away from the Steptoe Friendly Mart Monday afternoon after the driver was unsuccessful in an attempt to purchase gas. The owners of the mini mart stopped purchasing gas some time ago, but will begin stocking gas in the near future. Steptoe Friendly Mart doesn’t have gasoline to sell at present, and its grocery shelves are a bit bare, but the owners say that will change. Margo Balzarini of Colfax and Patricia Arnold of Thornton opened Palouse River Quilts Monday on Main Street in Colfax. Their store is the fourth fabric business to operate at the site. They have spent the past two months painting and making other preparations for opening the business. The store will operate Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will offer fabrics, patterns, thread and other supplies for quilting and embroidery. County public works officials and the contractor for the Airport Road project checked out the site last week to get some idea when work will start up again. Public Works Director Mark Storey said the project needs more time to dry out before work can resume. Storey said the site probably needs two to three weeks to dry out. He added they found some signs of motorists who had attempted to get through the blocked off road segments and left mud pits. Whitman County teams competed at the Ellensburg State Robotics Competition Feb. 23 and the three county rookie F.I.R.S.T. Lego League teams all were rewarded. Each of the teams of fourth through eighth-graders qualified to go to Ellensburg by placing in the top seven at an event in Cheney in January. The Whitman County Auditor’s election office will send out ballots two weeks before the April 23 voting day. The sheriff's office has issued a missing person report for Donavin D. Stapert, 17. The youth was last seen in Malden March 7 at 2:20 a.m. He reportedly made a comment that he intended to catch a bus back to Oregon. Deputies believe he could be in Spokane or Grants Pass, Ore. St. John Post Office In spite of letter campaigns and an overflowing public meeting, the St. John Post Office’s hours are reduced from eight to six hours daily and veteran postmaster, Bill Corder, is now working at the LaCrosse Post Office. Corder, who was St. John postmaster for almost 20 years, transferred to LaCrosse because his position in St. John was reduced to six hours a day.
