  • Kent clears 10-6 in track opener

    Gar/Pal/Colton track team, the lone small school competing in a big school lineup at the Lewiston Invitational Saturday, booked 13.5 points. Jeff Kent placed second in the pole vault at 10-6, to tie his top mark which was set at state last year. Kent also tied for fourth in the 200, and placed eighth in the 100 sprint. Derrick Bosch placed 10th in the discus and 12th in the shotput, and Kevin Knauff placed 15th in the 1600. The VikCats will be at the Kamiah meet Saturday....

  • SJE's Caleb Rich plans Aussie entry

    Caleb Rich, a junior at St. John-Endicott High School who competes in track and cross country under Coach Andrea Miller, has been selected from 300 athletes across the United States to compete in the Down Under International Games next summer. The games will be in Australia’s Gold Coast area June 24 to July 3, 2012. Rich will represent Washington State Cross Country on the National West Central Conference Team.     Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife now has an online reporting system for receiving information about the state’s growing wolf population.     Colfax High School baseball team will conduct a camp for boys 8-12 years old next Wednesday, March 21, after school until 5 p.m. Cost is $5 per child. Colfax Youth League skills assessment for the boys playing in the Majors will immediately follow the camp. Camp and the skills assessment will be at the old high school field next to the gym.     Coach Terry Eng and his Colfax softball crew will begin the season next week with a core of veteran players back on the roster for the new season. After returning to head the program last year, Eng has six senior players back for the new season. The Bulldogs’ opener has been booked next Thursday with a non-league trip to Freeman.     Local players who took part in the WIBCA all-star game at Curtis High Saturday were, from the left, Dustin Patchen of Colton, Cole McCanna of St. John/Endicott, Damian Loucks of Rosalia and Justin Berarducci of Colfax. Colton senior Josh Straughan was also selected for 1B all-star honor but was unable to attend.     More than 400 Little Guy wrestlers competed in the annual tournament at the Colfax High School gym Saturday. Wrestlers from as many as 12 Little Guy clubs took part in the event which was conducted on 12 wrestling squares marked off on three mats in the CHS gym.     The City of Palouse received six bids for the surplus metal building on Main Street. Part of the Brownsfield cleanup site, the 28 x 40 foot 1950s building drew a high bid of $1,555 from Stan Riebold of St. John. The bid statement required the buyer to remove the building from the property. Palouse city council approved the sale in a meeting Feb. 28.     McCoy Land Co. applied last week for a building permit to build six grain tanks and an office at the newly-formed company’s proposed grain terminal south of Rosalia. McCoy Land Co., a consortium of local grain cooperatives PNW Farmers Co-op and Co-Ag, is planning to build a high-speed high-volume facility to load large shuttle trains of grain.     Whitman County commissioners will next Monday finalize a $600,0000 loan from the Public Works Department’s Solid Waste fund to replace the chiller on top of the jail. The current expense fund will borrow $600,000 from the solid waste fund, which is kept outside of the operating budget. “Well I found $600,000,” said Gary Petrovich, county administrator, pointing to Public Works Director Mark Storey. “The loan shark’s sitting right over there.” The loan will be for nine years at a quarter-percent interest.     Colfax City Council is finalizing a written policy for the use of city credit cards by employees and town officials. The city makes most of its purchases through a purchase order system, but cards are used for smaller purchases and for employees who take part in out-of-town meetings and training sessions. Credit cards now are kept in the city vault and checked out to employees who need to make a trip or purchase.     A new contract to haul garbage away from Whitman County will save the solid waste department more than $400,000 a year. Public Works Director Mark Storey will present county commissioners next Monday with a contract proposal from Allied Waste. Storey said the deal with Allied provides significant savings over the county’s current deal with Waste Management.     Colfax shoppers will soon be able to pick up a bottle of liquor while shopping for bread, butter and milk. Shawn McAdams, manager of Rosauers in Colfax, said his store will swap video rentals for liquor sales when the new state law brought about by Initiative 1183 kicks into effect in June.
