A total of 22 Colton junior/senior high school students traveled to Spokane Community College March 9 to compete in the 2013 Science Olympiad regional tournament. This year Colton entered two teams of seventh to ninth graders. The first team placed ninth and the second team finished 12th in the field of 15 teams. Neither Colton team will advance to the state tournament. The Palouse Library hosted author Julie Kibler on Friday afternoon. Kibler is the sister of Palouse resident and preschool teacher, Brittany Sawyer, and had her debut novel published, “Calling Me Home.” Palouse Library branch Manager Bev Pearce said about 25 people came to Kibler’s reading and book signing. “It went really well,” she said. Kibler introduced two of the main characters in the book to her Palouse Library audience and then described the publication process. Garfield/Palouse swept St. John/Endicott Saturday at the Clarkston field with Jesse Lopez throwing a no-hitter in the first game. Lopez fanned 13 Eagle batters over seven innings The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning on the way to a 7-0 shutout. Lopez also had two hits. The second game shut down after five innings with a 17-6 win for the Vikings. Hunter Woltering, who held the Eagles to one run over the first three innings, took the win. Colfax and Freeman booked a marathon split Tuesday in the softball opener at McDonald Park. The Scotties took the first game 17-7 after Colfax had posted an early lead. The Bulldogs came back for a 15-12 win in the second game to wrap up over four hours of action. Kasey Cloaninger pitched the first game. She struck out four Scotties, walked seven and allowed 11 hits. She was also hampered by nine Colfax errors. The Colfax track team Saturday started the new season against some of the east side big teams at the Lewiston Invitational. The event brought in 10 girls teams with the Bulldogs taking 25 points for ninth place. Colfax boys rolled up 14 points to place 11th out of 13 teams. Walla Walla dominated both sides of the meet with the Blue Devil boys stacking 169 points and the girls totaling 180 for a 72-point margin over number-two Lewiston. The Clearwater Chapter of the Northwest Gold Prospectors Association will have its 14th annual free public outing at Gibbs Eddy, 14 miles east of Lewiston March 23-24. The event offers a chance to learn how to dredge, highbank, sluice and pan for gold. The event will from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Donavin D. Stapert, 17, reported missing March 7, still has not been located, Whitman County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Chapman said late Tuesday. The boy was last seen in Malden March 7 at 2:20 a.m. and he reportedly said that he intended to catch a bus to Oregon. Deputies believe he could be in Spokane or Grants Pass, Ore. Sgt.Chapman said the sheriff’s office has not received any leads. Donavin is 5-4 and weighs 140 pounds. Whitman County commissioners on Monday approved a $10,273 bid from Specialty Coatings of Colfax for a remodeling project for the Superior Court’s executive secretary office. A 12-foot archway will be cut out from the existing office, new dividing walls will be built and new carpet installed. Commissioners also approved a Palouse Wind habitat agreement. Gazette Editor Colfax City Council Monday night conducted an extensive review of a draft to update the city’s critical areas ordinance. The draft was presented by Don Brigham of Clarkston who has been hired by the city to update the ordinance. Councilman Jim Kackman, who had earlier submitted comment on an earlier draft, headed the council review of the ordinance. Court dates for two defendants who testified as witnesses in the trials of the Lazcano brothers last month were set last Friday, March 8, in superior court. Frank Lazcano was convicted of first degree murder March 1 after a one-week trial, and Daniel Lazcano faces a second trial after the jury in his case could not reach a verdict on kidnapping and murder charges after a two-week trial. Signup for the Direct & Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP) and Average Crop Revenue Election Program (ACRE) began Feb. 19. DCP signup runs through Aug. 2, and ACRE signup only goes through June 3. Producers have the option to choose which program they would like to enroll their farm in. Producers previously enrolled in ACRE are not required to continue in ACRE. The National Lentil Festival will begin accepting applications for vendors April 1 for the Aug. 16 – 17 event which will have approximately 120 vendor openings. Registration deadline is Friday, June 14, at 5 p.m. For both days of the festival, marketplace vendors will be located in the Spring Street parking lot and the Lentil Lane Food Court in Reaney Park. Farmington City Council accepted the resignation of Kelly Turk Monday night, March 18. His council seat position 1 is now open for a new representative to complete his term, which ends Dec. 31. Farmington mayor Ron Dugan seeks a successor. He was appointed last April and took the mayor’s oath vowing to take no pay or reimbursements for the job and leave office at the end of the term. Whitman County commissioners Monday approved reducing the minimum size of commercial lots from three acres to two acres in the Pullman-Moscow corridor zone. According to Alan Thomson, county planner, two acres is the minimum development size that is regulated by the state Department of Health. Thomson also said there might be some wiggle room on the regulated size depending on the soil drainage.
