  • Youth Outdoor Field Day to be held in Benge

    On Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, two one-day field events for kids will be held on two ranches near Benge. The event is put on by Youth Outdoor Adventures (YOA), an NRA-endorsed non-profit organization. On April 28 and 29, at the Bar U and Warm Springs ranches, kids from 9-17 will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor and shooting sports. Equipment, instruction and lunch is provided.     First Wind applied Friday for building permits to install 58 turbines at the company’s Naff Ridge wind farm. Freshman Ysabeaux Ng took first-place in Applied Technology for Washington state to qualify.     Whitman County Commissioner Greg Partch is the subject of a pair of political signs that have drawn the attention of county residents. The signs are created by a long-time adversary and both refer to him as "Psycho Greg." "I kind of like it. It reminds me that not everybody loves the decisions I make," said Partch.   • High water closes Bill Chipman trail

    Whitman County Parks Department Monday closed the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail due to flooding of Paradise Creek. The trail was opened at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. Janel Goebel, program representative for the county parks department, said crews will continue to monitor the trail through this weekend’s storms. The department will post updated information about the status of the trail, whether it is closed or still available for use, on its Facebook page.     Return of winter driving conditions brought a rash of accidents on area highways. Washington State Patrol Troopers have made the following reports: —A 2006 Ford Escape driven by Paula M. Jewell, 40, Palouse, went out of control and rolled on its top about four miles south of Palouse on Highway 27 at 4:50 a.m. March 21. The driver had been transported from the scene before the trooper arrived.   • Homicide investigation follows recovery of body at Bonnie Lake

    The body of an adult male was recovered late Sunday afternoon from the outlet creek south of Bonnie Lake in the northwest corner of the county west of Malden. A witness Monday reported to the Gazette the body was bound at the arms and legs and may have been a friend who has been missing since December. Sheriff Brett Myers reported a fisherman discovered the body just north of the Belsby Road crossing of the creek at Hole in the Ground.     Flood workers went into action Monday and Tuesday as area rivers and streams hit high water marks. Persistent, heavy rain added to one of the soggiest Marches on record and brought on minor flooding in Colfax, Palouse, Pullman and Moscow. The NRCS rain readings for March as of Tuesday have totaled 3.16 inches. March record is 4.10 in 1983. Two years ago the gauge measured .88, the record low. Weather service records at Pullman now have March at 3.52 inches, the fifth wettest on record. Top mark of 4.08 was set in 1950. Predictions of more rain...
