  • County, Hawkins revising deal

    A new deal could be in the works between Whitman County and Hawkins Companies on how much infrastructure the county will pay to build at the company’s proposed 714,000-square-foot shopping center west of the state line. Commissioners Greg Partch and Michael Largent held an impromptu question-and-answer session on the possibility of a new deal with several citizens Tuesday morning in lieu of an announced meeting of commissioners.   • Dams open after maintenance closure

    Navigation locks along the 350-mile-long federal Columbia-Snake river navigation system are back in business after a temporary closure to perform annual maintenance, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers navigation officials at the Walla Walla District. Each year, the Corps suspends navigation service at the eight dams between Portland and Lewiston for inspections, repairs and maintenance on navigation locks.     Whitman County Republicans Saturday elected a delegate slate which will carry a majority of Rick Santorum backers to the state convention which starts May 31 in Tacoma. Seven of the nine elected delegates said they would back Santorum although some said they would be willing to switch to another GOP contender at the state session. Whitman Republicans have been assigned a total of 12 delegates to the state event May 31 to June 2.   • Easter Bunny plans big egg-laying sweep around Whitman County

    The Easter Bunny will make his annual tour of Whitman County, dropping multi-colored eggs all over the Palouse. Hunting season runs primarily Saturday. Flooding may move the Palouse egg hunt from Hayton Green Park to the Lion’s Club R.V. Park as last week’s high water wreaked damage on the park. The free hunt is for kids ages up to age 8.     Joining an already crowded field of challengers, Whitman County Commissioner Greg Partch, 63, Garfield, announced Saturday his plans to seek a fourth term in office. Partch announced his candidacy at the county Republican party’s convention at the CETC building in Colfax.     March rain totals break records at stations across county. If March went out like a lamb, it was a the most water-logged lamb ever seen in Whitman County. Monthly rainfall totals were shattered at monitoring stations in Colfax, Pullman, Rosalia and Tekoa as a month of steady precipitation soaked the county. David Jones at the Natural Resource Conservation Service station atop hospital hill in Colfax recorded 5.05 inches of rain for the month.   • Brothers charged with murder

    Body found in Bonnie Lake is missing Rosalia man. Frank Lazcano, 24, Pine City, and his brother, Daniel Lazcano, 20, Spokane, remained in Whitman County jail Wednesday, each in lieu of posting $500,000 bonds, while they face first degree murder charges in connection with the death of 23-year-old Marcus Schur. Coroner Peter Martin identified Schur through dental records as the man recovered from the outlet creek at Bonnie Lake March 25.
