The effort to breach the Snake River dams is once again gaining momentum. This issue, although a very serious one, is like a whack-a-mole game. Hit one and another pops up elsewhere. The idea apparently has a life of its own. The revival of the idea cannot be because of the fish runs. The fish runs are healthier than they have been in years. Colfax girls placed fourth Friday in the big Carnival of Speed meet at McLoughlin High School in Milton Freewater. They rolled out 57.83 points in a meet which drew 22 teams, many of them large school teams from Oregon. Pentleton, a top divison school in Oregon, topped the team points with 127 points; Umatilla scored 74, and host McLoughlin 63. Track competitors from the Garfield/Palouse/ Oakesdale combo and St. John/Endicott rolled up some wins last Wednesday in the big SE district meet at Dayton. Anne Hockett took big wins in both hurdle events for the Vikings plus the 400 meter run. Sophomore Zoe Robertson took the 800 and the 1600. She won the 1600 with a margin of more than 17 seconds. S.J.E. freshman Jadyn Corder topped the discus by more than two feet with a 78-3 sling. She also placed third in the shot-put. Colton junior pitcher Carter Dahmen delivered a no-hitter against St. John-Endicott last Friday for an 11-0 win. The game was the first of a doubleheader. The Wildcats won the second game 21-0. Dahmen threw 13 strikeouts with two walks. At the plate for Colton (6-0 overall, 4-0 league), leadoff hitter Austin Meyer posted three hits and four RBIs in the first game. Registration for the Palouse 100K relay and solo run, sponsored by Pullman Regional Hospital Summit Therapy & Health Services, is now open. The race will be Saturday, April 18, and will begin at the Summit Therapy building located at 1620 SE Summit Court in Pullman. LaVern Torgeson as a member of the Detroit Lions after his WSU career. LaVern Torgeson, the LaCrosse High School graduate who played football for the Cougars at Washington State College and had a 42-year career in the National Football League as a player and a coach, died March 23 in Huntington Beach, Calif. The Gar-Pal baseball season is underway, dodging rainouts with the return of longtime coach Jim Stewart. Coaching the Vikings from 1988 until 2007, Stewart returns to the helm this spring. On the roster for the 3-1 team are four seniors, four juniors, a sophomore and four freshman. "It’s been a lot of fun," said Stewart. "It’s a great group of kids." Springdale softball players will bring an 8-0 league record to McDonald Park Friday when they go up against the Colfax Bulldogs. Colfax will host with a 4-0 record after defeating the LRS Broncs in two games last Friday. The Bulldogs blanked the Broncos 19-0 over five innings in the first game and stacked up 17 hits. Volunteer clean-up crews from throughout the Palouse will converge Saturday for the 11th annual Pullman Stream Clean-up. Organized by the City of Pullman and the PalouseClearwater Environmental Institute, the event attracts more than 200 students and residents each year. Crews will start at the Spring Street Park, next to the skate park, then spread out along the South Fork of the Palouse River. Applicants named on the application are Cloud 9 Smoke & Ale LLC as Eugene J. Demesa, Caroline Demesa and Robert Stanton Courville. Dan Morris, Valleyford, retired banker, was elected to the board of Hill Ray Plaza. Morris takes the board seat which was vacated when Donald Deen of Colfax retired from the board. Morris retired from Bank of Fairfield in 2002 and worked for Windermere Real Estate for five years. He began his financial career at Kirkpatrick, Utgaard & Perry in Colfax in 1972 and then joined Washington Trust Bank in 1982 and was employed there before joining the Bank of Fairfield. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun implementing its 2015 Spring Fish Operations Plan. The program provides for spills at the four lower Snake River and four lower Columbia River dams to facilitate the timely and safe passage of juvenile salmon and steelhead. Port of Whitman County commissioners on April 2 approved a cooperative agreement to better inform the public about what three local ports are doing. The Port of Whitman County along with the Port of Clarkston and the Port of Lewiston agreed to enlist Desimone Consulting Group to draw a regional picture of what the ports’ roles are in the region. The city of Tekoa will chip-seal five roads this summer in a project estimated to cost $75,000. The roads, which are now gravel, will effectively be paved once work is complete. Howard, Sophy, Elizabeth, Truax and Lebo streets are residential roads as short as three blocks long. “We’ve been wanting to do this,” said Tekoa Mayor John Jaeger. Emergency Management Director Bill Tensfeld on Monday recommended a Seattle engineering company as a radio system consultant for the county’s emergency management. The number-two bid was approved by the county commissioners. Five bids were received for the consulting services, and after examining the bids, Tensfeld found the lowest bid from Concepts to Operation of Annapolis, Md., for $76,700 did not meet specifications.
