An appeal hearing has been set for 11 a.m. May 1 for the denial of a re-zone request on a 22-acre agricultural zone off Airport Road east of Pullman. The change would have made it a cluster residential district. The matter did not pass at the Planning Commission hearing April 15, with one member of five voting against it. Lloyd Albert Elze Lloyd Albert Elze, 78, Thornton, died April 12, 2017, in Spokane. In accordance with his wishes, a funeral service will not be conducted. He was born on August 22, 1938, in Westcliffe, Colo., to Marion L. and Martin G. (Hunt) Elze. His parents were part of the pioneer families in Wet Mountain Valley, Colo. Hiring of a new special education teacher for Jennings Elementary School was approved April 10 by the Colfax School District board. Taylor Weekes joins the staff after serving as a long-term substitute for the second/third grade classroom in Endicott. Endicott Saturday, April 15, was the annual Easter egg hunt at Trinity Lutheran church. Ladies of the church filled the plastic eggs with candy on April 6. They also made Easter bags as gifts for the children that attended. Expected to resume in March, the county's Sand Road project near Pullman remains on hold due to weather. “We're maybe a few weeks away from starting at this point,” said Mark Storey, county Public Works director. “There's water everywhere.” Work remaining includes one-half mile of road still to build a base for and realign, followed by cleanup on the section where a rock crusher was last fall when, due to high rainfall in October, the project was put on hold. A public open house has been slated for tonight, Thursday, in Pullman to allow the public to learn about an upcoming construction project in Pullman planned by the Washington State Department of Transportation. Nearly a decade ago, the Whitman County commissioners and Council on Aging and Human Services entered into a transportation program agreement that would allow the COA to acquire vanpool vehicles.
