    The horrors of disaster, war and abject poverty flashed across the screen at a recent Red Cross training workshop at Colfax High School Thursday. John Caskey, a Red Cross attorney from Spokane, spoke for four hours on the current work the organization performs in America throughout the world.   • County cuts payroll, inspection servicesto junior tax districts

    In an effort to shed its administrative duties, Whitman County has given up some of the maintenance work it has performed for county towns and taxing districts. Auditor Eunice Coker last month stopped processing payroll for the county’s fire, cemetery and parks districts. Paychecks and tax reporting for volunteer firemen, cemetery and parks groundskeepers and even swim pool lifeguards had been processed by the auditor’s staff.     Brennan Gonzalez, 6, St. John, rides on an inverted bucket while his dad, Guy Gonzalez, directs one of the teams in the weekend’s plowing bee next to the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds. Cody Erickson was also on the plow for the team which was made up of horses owned by Louis Gaiser and Stan Riebold of St. John. Approximately 60 head of horses and mules took part in the plowing bee. Grain shipped down the chutes from the high bluffs to the steamboat landings on Sanke River last year was so badly injured by the friction that it sold at less than half price in Portland.     Dusty Dusty saw a first in its history Sunday. Five traffic jams in one day at the intersection of Highways 26 and 127. Five of the 160 foot long blades for the wind farm being built on the hills above Dodge, had to make a 90 degree turn from Highway 26 to 127.     Members of the Colfax High School Jazz band opened their competition season Saturday morning by playing their set under the direction of Mike Morgan at Columbia Basin College’s Jazz Unlimited.
