Looking Ahead Dear Looking, Many retirees are unclear with what Medicare does and doesn’t cover when it comes to eye care. The good news is that Medicare covers most medical issues like cataract surgery, treatment of eye diseases and medical emergencies. But unfortunately, routine care like eye exams and eyeglasses are usually the beneficiary’s responsibility. Here’s a breakdown of ho... Full story

    Apr 23, 2014

8 years ago The Commoner April 26, 1889 The great importance which Whitman County bears to the territory, or state, of Washington, is gratifyingly shown in the apportionment of districts, recently made by the governor, secretary and chief justice. Whitman is one of four counties whose population was sufficient to admit more than one district within its boundaries. In this respect it is exceeded only by King and Spokane counties each of which form two distinct districts and portions of a third. Pierce County contains two districts. Colfax... Full story

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. When I was in third grade, I discovered that boys and girls are different. It’s valuable information. It started with art class, though based on my work maybe it would be more accurately called “smear color on paper” class. The assignment was to use acrylics to create something worth hanging in the hallway, which for me was going to be impossible unless I painted a sign that said, “EXIT.” We were given poster-sized paper, tubes of paint that tasted terrible if you were dumb e...

Concert review I went to the band concert at the school Monday night. If you missed it, you missed an hour of pure enjoyment. From the 5th grade through high school and the jazz band it was perfect. It was all wonderful, but I must say that the highlight of the concert was when the high school band played a piece called Prairie Song that was the most amazing piece of music. Every note played told me the story of the prairie. I was riding in a covered wagon and the pages kept turning and pictures filled my mind and I was living a trip through...

    Apr 23, 2014

To paraphrase the line often attributed to Mark Twain, there are lies, damn lies and the “equal pay” statistic. The factoid that women earn only 77 cents of every dollar earned by men is the focal point of a feminist cargo cult. It has its own movement and its own quasi-holiday, the so-called Equal Pay Day, marking how far into a new year women supposedly have to work to match what men made the prior year. The figure is presumed to clinch any debate over the continued existence of massive discrimination against women in the workforce. Dra...

Those of us who rely on political drama, real or contrived, to justify our professional existence are drooling over the possibility that the next presidential balloting will be a dynasty election. Obviously we have a huge amount of foolishness and outright nastiness to get past between now and then, but what a story it would be if the party nominees are Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, Queen Hil vs. Prince Jeb. Imagine the plot lines: Tudors, Windsors and the Beverly Hillbillies. Instead of a Democratic Convention, that party could have a... Full story

It seems all the news is grim. Not so. Some of it is just inexplicable. Take the California teenager who reportedly sneaked onto a major airport, roamed the tarmac and climbed into the wheel well of a Boeing 767 jet bound for Hawaii. The flight was about five and a half hours long and reached altitudes of more than 30,000 feet. He didn’t freeze. He didn’t die from lack of oxygen. He didn’t fall to his death when the wheels were dropped for landing. After the plane landed, he stumbled out onto the tarmac apparently no worse for wear. Docto...

  • Bulldogs lead N.E. league despite first loss

    Apr 23, 2014

A season win string that extended for 11 games came to an end Saturday at Colbert when the Bulldog baseball team dropped a one-run loss to Northwest Christian in the second game of a doubleheader. The host Crusaders took a 3-2 win in the second game with a deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Colfax, which had a 2-0 lead after three innings, had only one runner get on base over the sixth and seventh innings. Coach Mike Parrish noted NWC had just three hits in the game, and all their runs were unearned. Six errors by the Colfax...
