The Colton High School baseball team picked up two close league wins at Liberty Christian April 19. Tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning of the first game of a doubleheader, back-to-back RBI singles from Levi Weber and Dalton Patchen lifted the Wildcats to a 5-1 win. The Garfield-Palouse/Tekoa-Oakesdale baseball team lost both games in a doubleheader at Asotin April 19, dropping their record to 5-5-1. In the first game, the Vikings went down 9-1 as the team’s lone senior, Jesse Lopez, pitched all seven innings, giving up four earned runs. The Garfield-Palouse/Tekoa-Oakesdale softball team played at Asotin April 19 for a doubleheader and lost twice, 9-0 and 13-3. All told, they struck out 20 times in 12 innings. “We didn’t hit. We didn’t play well. So we lost two games,” said Gar-Pal/T.O. coach Steve Witthuhn. Pomeroy golfers booked another team win in the April 15 match at St. John with a 132 score led by the 42 medalist score posted by Devon Caruso. Chase Ward of Asotin finished two strokes back at 44. Colfax softball players were rained out of a trip to Springdale Tuesday and hoped to make up the games today. The Bulldogs are targeting the remaining three rounds of the NE league run after traveling to Colbert Saturday and battling with the NWC Crusaders in a showdown of the undefeated league teams. The Colfax High boys golf team competed at The Fairways in Cheney Tuesday and took first place with a combined score of 452. Northwest Christian followed with 466 while Wilbur-Creston had 473 and Lind-Ritzville-Sprague 482. Jimmy Psoms of St. George’s took first in individual with a 76. The Council on Aging and Human Services will participate in the 2014 March For Meals campaign Saturday, April 26. Volunteers will be encouraged to help put nutritious food on the table of senior citizens by participating in a 3K fun run/walk starting at 10 a.m. at McDonald Park in Colfax. On April 12, 2014, 19 Colton students placed 13th at a science Olympiad. Colton students traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney to compete in the 2014 State Science Olympiad Tourna-ment. The team consisted of 15 seventh through ninth graders with four alternates. They placed 13th in a field of 20 teams. The average size enrollment of the schools which they competed against this year was approximately 700. “Our Awesome Journey,” by Albert and Aimee Anderson is a new memoir by the late former pastor of the Colfax Assembly of God church and his widow. Albert served at Assembly of God from 1975 to 1982 before acting as pastor at Ellensburg from 1984-94. The book was written by Albert and Aimee before Albert died in March, 2013. Aimee finished the book. They were married for 58 years, after first meeting when Albert was a hired worker on Aimee’s father’s wheat farm near Walla Walla. Native plants are almost extinct on the Palouse, but the Palouse Conservation District hopes to remedy that. Conservation District Manager Jennifer Boie said that the district is in the second part of a three-phase process of identifying potential prairie remnants in Whitman County. The Oakesdale School District’s $7.1 million construction bond proposal failed to get even 50 percent approval in Tuesday’s special election. The unofficial count at the elections office as of Tuesday evening tallied 206 yes votes for 49 percent and 215 no votes for 51percent. The bond required a 60 percent majority to pass. Whitman County officials were notified last week that Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services suspended its long-term rating on the county’s general obligation bonds and removed the rating from CreditWatch. County commissioners Monday during their regular meeting discussed the ramifications of the notification and concluded they aren’t really sure how this will affect the county’s financial business.
