David Benscoter is still on the hunt for apples unique to Whitman County that were thought to be extinct. “I am planning an outing for May 11 to several of the locations that may hold extinct apples,” the Chatteroy resident said. “Apple trees should be easier to locate at this time as they’ll be blooming,” he said. “I will map the locations I go to and in the fall, I plan to return and pick apples.” Benscoter plans to take photos of the blooming trees and map their locations. The Palouse Knowledge Corridor will host a business showcase to promote economic development and growth on the Palouse. The city owns the school athletic fields and the school owns a prominent old building on Main Street. This is the situation in Colton, which may change as discussions are being had about a potential trade between the city and the school. The building is the two-story old brick bank on Highway 195 across from the post office. Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers told county commissioners Monday morning that he needs to add a part-time jail position as soon as possible. With an increased jail population, Myers said he had to consolidate part-time positions to full time. He now has 13 corrections officers on staff. “We have a packed house,” he said. “It’s really difficult to give time off.” Myers calculates that without the addition of a part-time employee, the department will have to pay 828 hours of overtime amounting to $21,000 in overtime hours. The annual Colton-Uniontown Fair, featuring animal-showing from cats to horses, along with home arts, fine arts and educational exhibits, will be April 26, the Friday before the Spokane Junior Livestock Show. This eagle, a resident of the North Fork of the Palouse River since winter, appears to be on guard. The eagle’s nest along the North Fork of the Palouse River is still occupied, but no chicks have been seen yet. Two American bald eagles have been spotted at the nest.
