The Palouse school board announced it can legally rent out the Little Sprouts Day Care at a board meeting last Thursday, April 28. While the board did not vote on that topic, it gave the group of parents present a heads up on the possible future options for the only day care in town. The day care is located in a former residence across from the high school. In the meantime, a task force of parents and school board members created by the school board last month is at work researching other options to keep the day care open. That task force will...
Whitman County may have fewer lentil fields this summer, as European buyers have tightened restrictions on how much residual glyphosate, most commonly found in Round-up, can be on imported lentils. The European Union is currently rejecting lentils which have a residue count higher than one-tenth of one part per million; U.S. standards allow five parts per million. “A part per million is like a teaspoon in a gas tank of a mid-sized car,” said Todd Scholz, Director of Information & Research for the U.S. Dry Pea and Lentil Council in Moscow. “If...
A last-minute wave of donations pushed the funding to the needed amount for the 2011 edition of Kids’ Fish-In. So, it is a go this year at Gilchrist Pond on Union Flat Creek. “We got the gap filled,” said Janet Schmidt, WSU county extension director. The extension office has been struggling to raise $2,500 for the annual kids fishing program since the state department of Fish & Wildlife announced last November it was cutting that amount from the Whitman County program. Three weeks ago, the fate of the program for this year was still uncer... Full story
How do you feel about Osama bin Laden finally being captured and killed by the U.S.? Daydn Ginther, Colfax “I used to live near New York. I had friends and family that were affected by him. I am glad.” Vivian Evans, Lewiston “I feel great. I flew my flag.” Angelica Bennett, Colfax “It’s a relief, but in my opinion I think the war is just beginning. I think we’re going to see a lot of retaliation from this.” John Adler, Potlatch “I’m glad they kept up and didn’t give up on trying to find him. You shouldn’t let people like that get away with...
W. BRUCE CAMERON My mother called me a few days ago to proudly announce that she and my father now have voicemail, which they don’t. What they have is an answering machine my mother found at a garage sale, which is where I think she also found my birthday presents: four t-shirts that all say “Call Me Pinky” on the front. When I dutifully wear the t-shirts to the gym, people come up to me and say, “Hey, Pinky.” I don’t like that. My mother likes garage sales because they are a less expensive place to buy things she doesn’t need. She brings he... Full story
Colfax Fire Chief Ralph Walter reported Monday night replacing a fire truck which failed to meet pumping standards could mean a major cost to the city. Walter said costs of a new truck with the same capabilities would probably be in the $200,000-plus range. The 1980 GMC pumper truck failed to meet National Fire Protection Standards in tests April 23. Two other trucks passed the test. Chief Walter said the main problem with the 1980 truck is age. He noted the department spent about $800 in upgrades before the test. The work improved the...
The official start date of the fishing season for the state was April 30. But game department spokesman Madonna Luers pointed out this date has little relevance for fishing in Whitman County. “Whitman County has no waters that open on April 30. They are all either year round or started earlier,” Luers told the Gazette. The two biggest bodies of water in the county, Rock Lake and the Snake River, are both open year-round. Fish and Wildlife employees have been stocking the local lakes with thousands of rainbow trout and brown trout starting Feb...

Some clarity Two weeks ago Gordon had an editorial calling for a compromise of Republican spending cuts and Democrat tax increases as a recipe for reducing our out of control deficit. Last week a letter in agreement with the tax hike portion of the plan was printed. I felt that maybe some clarity was in order. Merely citing what income tax rates have been in the past doesn’t mean it was a good thing, or reflect how it impacted the economy. Reagan did inherit a 70% tax rate from a horrific Jimmy Carter economy. Reagan left with tax rates at 2...
As the price of gas passes $4 on its way to $5 a gallon, the finger pointing in Washington, D.C. has reached a frenzy as politicians rush to place blame. “Wall Street profiteers!” “Speculators!” “Big Oil!” As if on cue, the administration has launched another investigation into charges that speculators are manipulating oil prices – a perennial response of elected officials when gas prices stir anger among the electorate. Previous investigations have found no conspiracies. What is causing our high gas prices? To answer that question, let...
ITEM—Efforts by bill or amendment to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining driver’s licenses failed to make it into law during the legislative session that ended April 24. Proponents have another chance to try for it in the special session the governor called to begin April 26. The Senate refused to bring up for action the bill or the amendment which would have required the state Department of Licensing to verify the citizenship of driver’s license applicants if they fail to provide a valid Social Security number. COMMENT—I haven’t heard on... Full story
The terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is dead. He was killed in Pakistan during a raid by Navy SEALs. Details are still being released, but the SEALs helicoptered into his compound, overcame resistance and ended his life. No Americans were injured in the raid, and a lot of computer equipment and information was captured that may prove invaluable in the continuing fight against his followers and others like him. The search for bin Laden took years. Most of the recent search concentrated in Pakistan in the lawless tribal areas near the Afghan... Full story

One of the county’s Highway 27 landmarks, the Shoemaker barn four miles south of Garfield, took a big blow with the last big snowstorm of winter and is about to leave the scene. Stephen William and Lucretia Bishop Shoemaker operated a dairy out of the barn and served many families in the area until stricter state regulations closed down small dairies, according to Peggy Collier, a granddaughter of the Shoemakers. Stephen William was the son of Stephen Bell and Mary Shoemaker who settled on the property in October of 1879 after moving from R...
