    Colton clinched the Southeast 1B League championship with a doubleheader sweep over Rosalia Saturday. Winning 18-3 and 7-5, the Wildcats worked off of strong pitching from Dalton Patchen, Jake Straughan and Jordan Druffel. Straughan struck out nine batters in the first game while Patchen struck out 10 in the second.     Colfax softball girls stacked wins in their last four league games Saturday and Monday to finish out a 10-2 run in the Northeast 2B league. The tally lands the Bulldogs in a solid number-two slot in the league standings before the playoff rounds start May 13.     Colfax baseball coach Mike Parrish has been on the telephone this week in an attempt to book a tune-up game before the first playoff rounds. The Bulldogs have been idle since last Tuesday when they swept the St. George’s team to end a 10-0 run in the NE league race. Parrish reports he has been calling all over the area in hopes of landing a game late in the week. The aim is to get in game mode competition before the start of playoffs.   • Bulldog girls win big at home meet

    Colfax girls continued their domination of the NE league Tuesday when they rolled up 184 points in an all league meet at the Colfax track. The meet was the lone high school meet which will be at the Bulldog track this year. The Colfax track surface has been fading fast over the last few seasons and work has already started to restore the surface which has sustained a breakup of the track surface and different spots around the loop.     Palouse Police Officer Brian Dentler has resigned his 3/4-time position for a new job at WSU. Reserve Officer Terry Snead was set to take his place beginning May 7.     A new complication has come up regarding the town of Garfield’s garbage truck. After the town bought the used 2002 Mack in December 2013 for $63,500 from West Valley, Utah, a group went to drive it to Garfield, including previous Mayor Jarrod Pfaff. Since then it has been at Western Systems in Spokane having its Curatto-Can device re-installed.     Port of Whitman County commissioners made their annual inspection at Boyer Park and Marina May 1. Concessionaires Leo and Terri Haas hosted the commissioners for lunch at the Snake River Bar and Grill and then Leo Haas took them on a tour of the park and marina. Several new signs guide visitors to different areas of the park. Twenty-four new trees were planted, replacing nine old trees that were removed because of disease problems and age.     Shelly McMasters was able to visit with family members and friends on May 3 at the Colfax United Methodist Church during a dinner fund raiser. McMasters is undergoing treatment for cancer and the funds raised will help pay for the expenses. McMasters’ sister, Kerry Barlow, surprised her by coming from Wisconsin early Saturday morning to join her in the fund raiser. All the tables were filled during the fund raiser, with the guest total about 125. The catering firm, Memorable Events, prepared the dinner and donated all the food for the event. A...

    Crew races returned Saturday to Wawawai on the Snake River with Oregon State University and Gonzaga crews hosted by the WSU Cougars. The crews raced in winds hitting the river canyon with gusts up to 17 mph.     The Walla Walla District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is implementing the 2014 seasonal lockage schedule for the passage of recreational craft through the following navigation locks: Lower Granite Dam, Little Goose Dam, Lower Monumental Dam, Ice Harbor Dam, all on the Snake River and McNary Dam on the Columbia River.   • Restoration nears completion on Uniontown’s Vollmer Building

    The restoration of the original front of the Vollmer Building in Uniontown is nearing completion. After aging brick was covered by stucco last fall at the side of the building and the roof was resurfaced, work to restore the original storefront began this spring. “It’s getting there, we’re hoping it’s all done by the end of May,” said Dale Miller, President of the Uniontown Community Development Association.     In a five-page letter sent out via email on Monday afternoon, Whitman County Auditor Eunice Coker went on the defensive to county elected officials and the media.     Gazette Staff Whitman County Treasurer Bob Lothspeich will not run for a fourth term when election filing opens Monday.
