Three Colfax residents advanced to this year’s Summer Olympics after claiming medals in the regional competition on the EWU track at Cheney last Saturday, May 5. Billy Swank brought home three silver medals, claiming runner-up in the 100-meter walk, the 200-meter walk and the standing long jump. The Garfield Elementary students and Garfield-Palouse Middle School Marimba ensemble, directed by music teacher Rebecca Hemphill, performed for the senior dinner last Wednesday at the Palouse Community Center. Cal Lewis, a JES fourth grader, and Dick Gebhardt, a five-time entrant, received the “People’s Choice Awards” May 3 to conclude this year’s street banner contest sponsored by the Colfax arts council. The winners were determined by a count of ballots on the entries which were deposited in paint buckets around town. In preparation for a complete remodel, the Endicott Branch of Whitman County Library is moving to the Endicott City Hall at 201 C Street. This temporary library location will begin operating Friday, May 11, with weekly hours remaining Tuesdays from 1-6 and Fridays 9-1. Whitman County has been awarded nearly $400,000 in grant funding from the state Department of Ecology for solid waste operations. Ecology officials announced nearly $19 million in grant funding to 95 local government entities.
