    A question has come up over what to do about the aging track at Colfax High School. While District Superintendent Michael Morgan waits on two more bids regarding repair and resurfacing options, track coach Jason Cooper advocates for a longer-term, more expensive solution.     Members of the Whitman Conservation District board are pondering whether to support adding more streams within the district to a state conservation program. Jennifer Boie, District Manager of the Palouse Conservation District, asked the board on May 8 to consider supporting adding more streams in Whitman County to the program and presented the board with a sample letter to send to the state Farm Service Agency.     The Garfield-Palouse/Tekoa-Oakesdale softball team faced an elimination game at Dayton Tuesday night and came through with an 8-5 win to keep their season alive. In a play-in game between the No. 5 seed Vikings and the No. 4 seed Dayton, the score was tied 3-3 in the fourth inning before Gar-Pal/T.O. went up 8-4 in the fifth and held the lead to win. Four players had two hits each for the Vikings, including Alexa Lindgren, Lexi Rodriguez, McKenzie McLanahan and Kelsey Bielenberg.     The St. John-Endicott-Lacrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus track athletes competed at two meets last week in preparation for the sub-district meet in Walla Walla yesterday. The top eight places will advance to the district meet from there. At a District 9 meet last Wednesday in Clarkston, LaCrosse senior Darcy Stamper won the high jump (6’-2”) and the long jump (19’-6”) while St. John freshman Adam Blakeley took third with a 17-7” in the long jump.     More than 40 athletes and parents worked April 30 to prepare the CHS track to start the work toward a new track surface. The volunteers spent hours edging, cleaning and clearing. More than 75 athletles now participate in track for this season on high school and junior high teams....

    After trailing Northwest Christian for five and one-half innings, Colfax broke out for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday to win the district title and a top slot in the state regionals. The two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth decided a tension-filled game between the two NE foes who topped the NE league race. Colfax left a total of 12 runners on the bases in the game.     Colfax boys topped four other teams Monday in the NE sub-district golf round at the Liberty Lake Meadowood golf course. The Bulldogs booked 108.5 team points. Eric Weitze of Colfax and Palmer Guhlke of Davenport tied for medalist honors with scores of 72.     Freshman Shaina Johnson of Rosalia will represent Eastern Washington University at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., beginning June 15. Shaina won the goat tying buckle at the Northwest Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals in Hermiston last weekend. For the regular season she placed third in breakaway roping and second in goat tying.     The No. 1-seed Colton High School baseball team began the playoffs with a 7-2 victory over District 7 No. 4 seed Elmira Coulee Hartline Tuesday afternoon. Playing at Medical Lake, Colton led 4-1 at the end of the second inning and 7-1 at the end of the third. “Nothing pretty,” said Colton coach Pat Doumit of the Wildcats’ scoring, which came on six bases-loaded walks and an error by the shortstop.     Colfax softball team downed Davenport in five innings Tuesday night at McDonald field to keep the number-two slot in the NE district’s playoff set. Colfax won 13-3 with Kasey Cloaninger getting the last RBI rap in the fifth inning to get the Bulldogs to the 10-run margin for an early close.     Three marijuana retail winners were announced by the state Liquor Control Board last week and one retail license assignment for the county remains in open status after failing to attract any applications. John Anthony Villa Jr. of Spokane with T&H Consulting, Mary Jane Smith of Pullman with For Art’s Sake and Leonard Breuer of Spokane with Silver Sands Distributors are the top three applicants drawn from the lottery from among 14 vying for the retail licenses.     Six county incumbents filed for re-election Monday morning when filing week opened at the elections office. Incumbents filing on Monday morning were Sheriff Brett Myers, Assessor Joe Reynolds, District Court Judge Doug Robinson, Prosecutor Denis Tracy, Commissioner Michael Largent and Auditor Eunice Coker. Coroner Peter Martin, who also announced earlier plans to seek another term, said he filed Tuesday at the elections office.     Two Spokane men were taken by MedStar helicopter to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane May 9 after they were injured in a car-truck accident on Highway 195 near the landfill turnoff on Carothers Road. The injured men were identified as Ryan W. Tritten, 24, Enumclaw, and James W. Sullins, 23, Spokane. The driver of the truck, Norman Druffel, 82, Pullman, was not injured in the crash.
