    May 19, 2011

Father and Daughter Speak: A Translation W. BRUCE CAMERON Communicating with teenage girls is easy unless you’re an adult, and then it’s like having someone take a pair of pliers and, one-by-one, yank off your fingernails through your ears. As a parent, though, there are times when you simply must talk to your teenage daughter, if only to ask her when she is moving out (something you start to wonder about when she’s, oh, 13.) Let’s say it is a Saturday and you’ve decided, in a misguided burst of nostalgia for those days when she was your little... Full story

  • Presidential primary’s end will save more than $44,000 here

    Joe Smillie|May 19, 2011

Whitman County will not hold a presidential primary in 2012, after Gov. Chris Gregoire last Friday signed a bill to do away with that election. The change, proposed as a cost-savings measure by Secretary of State Sam Reed, means once again all of the state’s electoral delegates will be selected by precinct caucuses and state party conventions. Whitman County Auditor Eunice Coker supported the move, citing its cost-savings and saying it held little relevance in whom the state selected for its presidential nominees. “For an independent, bla...

Point of Clarification On behalf of the teachers in the Colfax School District I would like to clarify a point in the May 12 Gazette article ‘Teachers urge school board…’ On April 20 the teacher’s association received an email from the PERC mediator stating that the school district’s hired professional negotiator had cancelled the May 18 mediation session. Any non-communication of this fact was not on the part of the teacher’s association, but between the district and their professional negotiator. The original article implied a lack of com... Full story
