The Mount Olive Cemetery near Kamiak Butte was the scene of an Eagle scout project headed by Mitch Barney of Colfax Saturday. Scouts from Troop 550 came, and boys and girls from the LDS church came. Adults came to help from Colfax, Palouse, St. John and Oakesdale. Boyd Jefferies and Jim Askins, who both have relatives in the cemetery, assisted. Everything was cut back, mowed, trimmed and weeds removed. Headstones were scrubbed and repaired....
On Memorial Day we remember loved ones who have entered eternity before us. We remember the love they had for their families and neighbors. We remember the ways they made their communities better. We remember their many valuable teachings. Many of these, our forbearers, lived to a ripe old age. Sadly, this past April saw the deaths of several Whitman County infants and toddlers. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce is preparing for the 27th annual National Lentil Festival in August and is seeking recipes for the 21st annual Legendary Lentil Cook-off. Festival organizers call for "creative cooks with lively lentil creations" from across the country to participate. Last year 114 recipes from 25 states and Canada were in the entry list. Tekoa 4H Clover Club kids, shown here with leader Nikki Lehn, did well at the 2015 Junior Livestock show. Those who all took swine were Randi Johnson, Delani Lehn, Rextyn Ramirez, Alex McHuarge, Riley Ramirez and Ally Blazack. The town of Tekoa is accepting letters of interest for a seat on the city council which is soon to be vacated by Eileen Soldwedel. Lacrosse Early arrivals for the LaCrosse Farmer's Festival June 20 can eat breakfast at the LaCrosse Café from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Breakfast will include sausage gravy over biscuits, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice. With improvements in patient re-admissions, Whitman Hospital and Medical Center has been named the recipient of the Award of Excellence: Critical Access Hospital award by Qualis Health. Whitman Hospital implemented a Re-Admission Reduction program, aiming to reduce the amount of re-admissions at the hospital within 30 days of discharge. Specifically, the program focused on reducing re-admissions for patients with congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction and pneumonia. The estate of the late Bill Winsor, a retired high school government and civics teacher from Bainbridge Island, recently donated his extensive vinyl opera record collection to Friends of Whitman County Library. The gift is particularly appropriate because Mr. Winsor was a well-known supporter of public education and the arts and is connected to Colfax through family relations. Pullman Farmers’ market opened its 2015 season last Wednesday amid rain and clouds that may have kept some consumers from attending. All vendors showed up ready to go, even with the heavy rainfall throughout the day.
