    Washington state auditors recently attempted to audit the Whitman County financials for 2012. They were unable to complete an actual audit, reporting that there was not enough information to even conduct one. Thus, all they could conclude was that serious problems exist. Once again the county just doesn’t know where it stands financially. Some of the inaccuracies and discrepancies the state auditors uncovered are staggering.     NEXT CITY CANDIDATE Michael Rizzitiello, Economic Development Project Coordinator for the City of Beaverton, Ore., will be the next lead applicant for the Colfax city administrator’s job. Mayor Todd Vanek told city council members Monday night Rizzitiello has been scheduled to visit Colfax for tours and interviews June 2.     Tekoa’s Slippery Gulch Board of Directors announced that the 2014 fireworks auction recently raised more than $10,000 for the annual fireworks show which is the grand finale to the Slippery Gulch celebration. The evening began with a revealing of the 2014 royalty float, themed “Walk on the Wildside” and accompanied by this year’s royalty court: Queen Kamryn Lehn, Princess Becky Zimmerman, Princess Maddie Bogenreif and Princess Melissa Groom.     Fifteen Colfax track team members booked tickets to the state meet next week with top finishes Tuesday in the NE district final at Whitworth. The Bulldog girls again dominated the NE with wins in 11 events. They finished with 176 points, 70 ahead of number-two Reardan.     Rosalia sophomore Eli Richardson pegged a 44-9.5 to win the shotput Tuesday on the 1B side of the NE district meet at Whitworth. Richardson also qualified with second-place finishes in the 100 at 11.17, and the 200 at 24.22. Dillon Jacobs qualified for state with 37-11.75 for third place in the triple jump.     Former Colton and current Stillman College (Alabama) quarterback Josh Straughan was named a Presidential Scholar at Stillman for maintaining a grade point average between 3.9 and 4.0. He was also the only Stillman football player to be named to the All-Academic Team for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.     St. John senior Elle Bailey was the lone county qualifier for the state B golf finals when she placed sixth in the second SE district finals at Palouse Ridge. The second round followed the cut in the sub-district round at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick the previous Monday. Bailey finished with a 249 combo score after booking 125 and 124 in the two SE rounds.     The Garfield-Palouse/Tekoa-Oakesdale softball team pushes farther into the postseason Saturday with an 11 a.m. game in Richland against Colfax. The Vikings first beat Dayton last week to open the postseason which advanced them to play seeding games last Friday, May 16, against DeSales and Tri-Cities Prep.     Final round of state qualification for SE track teams will begin today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. at the University of Idaho track in Moscow.     Hunter Weitze shot a 70, two under par, Monday at Liberty Lake's Meadowood Course to win the NE B championship with a score of 142 over the two rounds. Weitze led a lineup of four Bulldogs who qualified for the state meet next week in Tacoma.     Colfax will face the DeSales Irish Saturday in the first round of the regional playoffs at Avista Stadium in Spokane at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs go into the regional as the top NE team after edging Northwest Christian last week in the league round at Medical Lake.     Colfax softball team again ran into Crusader power and pitching Tuesday at the Merkel complex to remain in the NE league’s number two spot going into the regional round at the TRAC complex in Yakima Saturday.     The Palouse Lions Club may soon be serving beer and wine to members and guests at the hall it rents from the city.     Relay for Life is going through some changes this year. The walk to raise funds for cancer research will be from noon to midnight on Saturday, July 12.
