    Defending champion Colton will enter the state 1B softball tournament as a No. 2 seed after losing to Almira/Coulee/Hartline in a District 7/9 seeding game Monday night. The Wildcats lost 5-1 on a day their hitting failed to come through. “You can make a lot of excuses,” said coach Brad Nilson. “We just didn't hit, plain and simple. They didn't throw anything we couldn't hit.” The game was played at Medical Lake – moved from last Saturday due to weather.     Liberty Bell pitcher Derek Alumbaugh attempts to pick off Colfax’s Cal Gregory as the Bulldogs’ offense comes to life in late innings at Ferris. Coach Mike Parrish and his baseball crew will travel to the state's final-four rounds at Wheeler Field in Centralia this week after rolling up two solid wins in the regional playoffs at Ferris High Saturday.     A three-person race is on for mayor in Garfield, including an incumbent, the eight-year mayor he replaced and a rookie. Mayor Ray McCown seeks re-election to his second term of his current mayorship, a third chapter after he served as mayor from 1972-1988, followed by another term in the early 2000s.   • Contested races emerge in candidate filings

    At the conclusion of the candidate filing period last week, several primary races and contested races emerged around the county, as did two councils that will see nearly complete makeovers. The primary races will all be in Garfield and Pullman. Garfield will see the mayoral race hit the ballot for the Aug. 1 primary with three candidates vying for the seat currently held by Ray McCown.
