    Monday was tax day, April 15. It marked the 100th consecutive year of income taxes. A man and a woman commemorated the day in front of the Codger Pole in Colfax. They carried signs protesting taxes. One sign read, “Control Government.” The other read, “Over Taxed.” On the same day, two explosions ripped through the crowd at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.   • Port approves installation of new Wilma sewer drainfield

    Port of Whitman County commissioners approved building a new sewer drainfield at the Port of Wilma with an estimated cost of $75,000 to $80,000 at the port’s meeting on April 4. Port Director Joe Poire told commissioners at the meeting the estimated cost was between $40,000 to $45,000 just to repair the Port of Wilma drainfield. Poire said the Asotin County PUD will take over the drainfield after the new one is built.   • Shed and scale project underway at Palouse

    A new truck scale and dump shed are taking shape at the Palouse Grain Growers elevator at the west side of Palouse. The project began Monday, April 9, after the co-op of 55 farmers received a deed correction from the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), which affected the project’s conditional use permit.     In an article titled “Vikings take down Spartans 6-5” in the April 11 issue of the Gazette, Cameron Lehn was mistakenly identified as playing catcher for the T.O.R. softball team. Lindsey Lindgren was the actual catcher. In addition, the T.O.R. softball team is designated the Nighthawks, as opposed to the T.O.R. baseball team which is known as the Spartans.     Colfax sophomore Hunter Weitze finished with a 82 Tuesday at the Fairways golf course at Cheney to lead another Bulldog golf win. Team membbers played 18 holes on the par 72 Fairways course. Colfax again took team honors witha 476 with Odessa-Harrington 485 and Northwest Christian at 497. Other cards for the Bulldogs were Kasey Johnson 88, Cody Gronning 96, Chris Koenig 104, Cole Neu 106, and Cody Muir 128.     The Gar-Pal baseball team raised their record to 4-9 with a 10-inning win under the lights at Rosalia Tuesday night. Playing against 2B Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia, the 1B Vikings trailed 10-4 in the second inning before tying the score to force extra innings. In the 10th, Jesse Lopez hit a grand slam to put Gar-Pal up 14-10.     The Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia baseball team picked up two wins and a haunting loss this week. Playing at St. John-Endicott for a doubleheader on Saturday, the Spartans took two wins, 17-1 and 19-8. “It was miserable to say the least,” said T.O.R. coach Kevin Young. “We had hail sideways for parts of the first game.     Colfax girls Tuesday defeated Springdale twice with a 7-6 escape win in the first game and a 19-9 explosion in the second game at McDonald Park. The Bulldogs are now 6-2 in league play with two more league rounds. Davenport is scheduled to play here today, Thursday.     The Gar-Pal Vikings softball team increased their record to 7-6 overall on the season beating T.O.R. 20-12 on Tuesday. The win followed doubleheader losses at Colton April 12. Against T.O.R. at home, Gar-Pal leadoff hitter Lexi Rodriguez went 5 for 5 with a double while Brianna Brown was 3 for 5 and Cassie Martin 1 for 5 with a triple.     Colfax boys Tuesday booked their third straight league sweep by taking out Springdale in two five- inning games at McDonald Park, 13-3 and 14-0. The twin-win day followed double wins over Northwest Christian and Davenport last week. Colfax now stands 8-2 in league play with a final league round at Liberty Saturday.     It was the bottom of the fifth inning. In the first game of a doubleheader at home vs. Gar-Pal, Colton senior Justin Meyer walked up to the plate with the bases loaded.   • Colfax joins support of rail-to-trail proposal

    Colfax Mayor Todd Vanek reported Colfax has now agreed to join with Pullman, Albion, Moscow and other backers for conversion of the former Union Pacific railroad link to a Colfax-Pullman trail. Representatives of Pullman and the Pullman Civic Trust met with city officials last month and outlined their approach to the proposal.     Pullman police on April 10 arrested two suspects in the case involving the assault of WSU faculty member David Warner in the early morning hours of March 30. Pullman Chief Gary Jenkins reported Madeline A. Fouts, 21, was arrested at 12:30 p.m. on a probable charge of rendering criminal assistance and providing false statements.   • Frank Lazcano sentenced to 25-year prison term

    Convicted by a jury of first degree murder six weeks ago, Frank Lazcano, 25, was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday by Judge David Frazier in Whitman County Superior Court. Lazcano was convicted of felony murder in the death of Marcus Schur Dec. 27, 2011, at Malden. His brother, Daniel Lazcano, 21, remains in jail in Colfax awaiting a second trial in the shooting case.     Examples of Colton student work will be on display at the Dahmen Barn during May with the opening reception May 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. Some of the exhibited pieces will be for sale to help with a school art program next year.     After another delay, owners say the Grillbilly Cafe, LaCrosse’s new restaurant, will open Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m. Owner Dionne Evans said last week that they ran into more setbacks while remodeling the 100-year-old building. “We had some unforeseen difficulties,” she said.   • Shed revitalized for Dahmen Barn addition

    The Dahmen Barn at Uniontown will be gaining more space soon. Volunteers have completed interior demolition on a 30x60-foot loafing shed next to the larger artisan barn at the edge of Uniontown. Once finished, the revitalized shed will offer a large area for a classroom space and music performances, along with storage and bathrooms.     The Colfax School District conducted a public meeting April 11 to discuss the $250,000 security and capital improvements levy on ballots now. Supt.     The 2013 Old Time Farming Days plowing bee is set for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on farmland across from the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds. Stan Riebold, one of the organizers, said this is the 30th year for the bee. It’s all run by about 50 volunteers from as far away as Idaho and Clarkston, he said.
