Back to ordinary time Well, it’s back to ordinary time. The penitence of Lent, the joy of Easter, and the celebration of Pentecost are over for another year. The exciting colors of purple, white and red are folded up and put away. We return to ordinary life, represented by ordinary green, to symbolize ordinary time. No more fasts or feasts for a while. No more need to plan something extra-special for a while. Advent and Christmas are a long time off. No more Christian education for the summer, no more choir for the summer. We worked hard to mak...

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2008. When she was 18 years old, my daughter met the love of her life, the person who changed her life forever and without whom, she informed me, she simply couldn’t live. I sometimes wonder whatever happened to that guy. I was “cool to the concept” of her having a serious boyfriend the way liquid nitrogen is “cool to the touch.” In other words, when my brain absorbed the idea of a serious boyfriend, it froze and shattered. I suppose I knew that when young women go to college the...
Enormous help The article about our daughter, Rayna Charles, was wonderful (May 16, Gazette). She is getting very excited about her People-to-People trip to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Wales and England. She will be spending 19 days as a Student Ambassador representing the United States as well as Whitman County even though she is actually traveling with a group from the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. We would not have been very successful with the fund raising raffle we held without the enormous help of Mike Day (a...
There’s an old saying that oil and water don’t mix. That may be true, but apparently they coexist quite well. Traveling through Sweetwater in west Texas, you see an interesting mix of irrigated farming, cattle ranching, oil production and wind energy. Farmers draw water from wells to irrigate fields and provide drinking water for people and livestock. Scattered across those same fields are traditional oil wells that have been pumping crude since 1921. Less than 10 miles from Sweetwater is the Roscoe Wind Farm — 627 wind turbines standing in ir...
Quincy Jones and his brother Lloyd, ages 10 and 8, were the first kids to arrive in Sinclair Heights in Bremerton in 1943, he writes in his 2001 “The Autobiography of Quincy Jones,” Doubleday. Their father brought them by bus from Chicago to his new job as a carpenter in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard . Their mother was institutionalized, in and out of mental hospitals and their lives for years. “For years we had been running from and with gangs,” wrote Quincy. “Finally we had graduated to our own turf. We took charge of everything in Sinclair...
An AmTrack train derailed in the east when the rails split. A bridge collapsed across the Skagit River in Washington. A highway overpass in Missouri collapsed when two trains collided beneath it. All this in a few weeks. Since then, the word “terrorism” has been displaced by the word “infrastructure.” “Infrastructure” has been whispered in the past, but now it is getting the attention it deserves. America’s roads, bridges, rail system and water and sewer lines are getting old. Not to mention aging gas pipelines, such as the one that exploded...
8 years ago June 1, 1888 The towns of Whitman County never showed brighter prospects or displayed a future more encouraging for their own welfare and that of the county in general than at the present time. Colfax, the county seat of this, the best county in Washington, presents an exceptional good showing in the matter of growth and business increase, which is duplicated by the many other towns, though smaller, in the same proportions. Notwithstanding the dreadful calamity which befell Palouse City, property there is said to be higher than...
These reports are from the previous three issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Informal reports indicate service was interrupted at Rosalia, Malden, Fairfield and Spangle. The shutdown, which hit about 11 a.m., ended computer transactions, e-mail and...
