Whitman county qualifiers carved out a slice of the action Friday and Saturday in the 2B section of the state track and field championships at Cheney. Top team honors for the girls side again went to the west side schools with Northwest Christian of Lacey stacking an amazing 141 points, 49 ahead of number-two Pe Ell. Colfax softball season came to a sudden end Sunday morning at Gateway Park in Yakima when the Bulldog entry was shut down with a 1-10 loss to Napavine. The defeat put Colfax out of the playoff with a 1-2 record for the state show. Colfax, which had a number-five ticket to Gateway after the last round of playoff in Spokane among the SE-NE contenders, started with a 12-3 win over Kittitas, and then lost to Morton-White Pass on a 6-0 shutout. Little Goose dam will be closed to public vehicle traffic now through July 13 while construction crews replace the intake gantry crane. The north and south shore approaches to the top of the dam will be gated. Access through the construction work area will be limited to employees, contractors and delivery vehicles. Whitman County Administrative Director Gary Petrovich suggested to the board of county commissioners that they hold a series of workshops about budget planning. The timing of the restoration of Farmington’s basketball court was discussed at the city council meeting May 20. Mayor Ron Dugan announced that he wanted to hold off until the next meeting to discuss how to remove the 65 cubic yards of old concrete and what to do with it. LaCrosse students practice cursive writing in the manner of 1895 at the Jones School House May 24 at the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds. The Endicott branch of Whitman County Library will host a grand re-opening today (Thursday) from 5 to 7 p.m. The ceremony is set for 6 p.m. and features recognition of donors, refreshments and announcement of the winners of the silent auction and raffle. Community members are invited to participate in the silent auction and raffle until the grand re-opening. Whitman County Park’s Kamiak Butte Evening Campfire programs, which were discontinued several years ago as part of a budget crunch, will return to the area’s summer agenda this year. The first program will be Saturday, June 1. A “Flowers of Kamiak” hike will be led by parks board member Dan Leonard. Participants will hike up the Pine Ridge Trail to observe spring flowers of the butte. The program begins at 5 p.m. with a choice of either a one- or two-hour hike. Participants are advised to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy afterwards in the day...
Eighteen years ago, when Galen McGraw was a fourth grader at Jennings Elementary School, he was the shortest boy in his class. There was only one girl who was shorter. The ninth annual Palouse Spring Barbecue and Hot Rod Gathering will be Saturday from from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to the unique Main Street car show, the day will feature live music, vendors, a beer garden and Texas-style barbecue by C.D.’s of Moscow. Landowners and producers can now enroll in continuous CRP with general sign-up to follow. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on May 14 reminded farmers and ranchers that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve Program general sign-up beginning May 20 and ending on June 14. The extended filing on 62 city and town offices, school, fire, cemetery and park and recreation boards added five candidates to the list of office seekers. The extended filing period was opened last week only for those positions which failed to attract a candidate in the week-long filing period the previous week. After the initial week of filing, the elections office listed 62 positions which remained open for election after not attracting a candidate. That means 57 of the slots still lack candidates. Jury selection for the second trial of Daniel Lazcano continued into a second day Wednesday in Whitman County Superior Court. A total of 92 county residents were called to report Tuesday and 87 were seated for the start of the selection process. The selection process started after Judge David Frazier decided the court would attempt to seat a jury here before ruling on a motion by Lazcano’s defense attorneys to move the trial out of Whitman County. A total of 297 seniors will receive diplomas at the county’s nine high schools in the coming week. Again, the count of graduates has declined. This year’s class compares with 319 for last year and 323 for 2011. The county’s diploma rite will begin Saturday at five schools, Colfax, Colton, Garfield-Palouse, Pullman and Tekoa. Bob and Fran Blank will be this year’s grand marshals of the Rosalia Battle Days parade. “They ran out of old people,” Bob Blank said. “I think they scraped the bottom of the barrel and had to look under it.” Bob said his parents lived south of Rosalia near where the wind turbines are now. He is a 1955 graduate of Rosalia High School and has lived in Rosalia all his life, except for two years in the military. He said he worked on the Pacific pipeline from 1961 until he retired in 1995.
