Dams are the Northwest flood busters The U.S. is being inundated with historic floods from Minnesota to Louisiana as a massive amount of water from heavy rainfall and snowmelt races down the Mississippi River. With U.S. taxpayers shouldering the majority of the claims through the National Flood Insurance Program, Bloomberg reports the Mississippi’s surge could result in the highest flooding losses since the $16 billion in claims following Hurricane Katrina. Without our network of dams on the lower Columbia and Snake rivers, we’d be in the sam... Full story

President Obama’s Middle East speech You know what I was afraid our president would do in that much awaited speech to the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC after he got his comeuppance from Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? Tell Saudi Arabia to get on board promoting peace between Israel and the Palestinians or we would stop buying its oil. That would make him look sincere in his insistence that the U.S. (its president anyway) is a friend of Israel and abet his goal of getting us out of our reliance on foreign oil suppliers by reducing a...

Third big tuition increase coming The cost of a college education is skyrocketing. Tuition at colleges and universities has become more and more costly, rising much faster than the cost of living itself. Locally, Washington State University could see tuition increases of 16 percent. This is coming after 14 percent increases in each of the last two years. On top of this, direct state aid for students is drying up. Fewer students will be able to obtain student aid. Middle class families will be hardest hit. The money simply will be not there, exc... Full story

The 3-2 bottom line for the playoff matches the state run made two years ago by another Eng team. Last year, Colfax posted a 2-2 run under Coach James Bledsoe but again...

Now only accessible with the permission of private landowners, Gildersleeve Falls was once seen as a vast resource for irrigating and powering the Columbia Plateau. Local historian Alex McGregor, whose family once owned the falls, said a dam was set up at the falls by the Palouse Irrigation and Power Co. in 1897 to provide power to residents of Washtucna and to hold water for farmers from...

Commemoration of Ascension It just so happens that today, June 2, falls exactly 40 days after Easter this year. In many Christian traditions, this day marks commemoration of Ascension. In Acts, Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after he left the tomb empty on that first Easter morning (see Acts 1:1-11).As far as celebrations in the life of the church, Ascension hardly ranks up there with Christmas, Easter or even Pentecost. However, it does help us connect the story of Jesus to our life here and now in Whitman County. Here’s how the story g... Full story

  • Good Old Days 6/2/11

    Jun 2, 2011

8 years ago - June 4, 1886 Henry Ackerman, an influential farmer and stockraiser living near Penawawa, has furnished us a list of names of about 20 of his neighbors who have signed a paper to the effect that they will sever their business connection with Colfax in the event of local prohibition passing at the approaching election, and will go elsewhere to do their trading. This is not a bluff, and we submit to the people of Colfax if our business interests are capable of sustaining serious defections of this character, for it must be remember... Full story
